Duh! the emirates is a peninsula, covered three sides by water, island is four sides of water. and no its not a happy place to live, wait till you default on a credit card or your visa expires. these blood sucking arabs will shoot you down as if you were a wounded hoarse, no good for there derby.
Most of complains like yours comes from prostitutes coming with a visit visa and even them they have a way to renew it, so what exactly happened to you ?
Dubai is awesome just got back from a holiday there a coupla weeks back. plus i know loads of people who moved there from Hong Kong (where i live) and love it.
Dubai is not a place to live ! yes its nice for a few days or max week or so, but you should hear the ppl who lived there long. they treat ppl as a bag o money and has NO FUCKN respect and veryyyyyyy racist ppl.
