DIY Satsuma Candle
-
You will need:
- Satsuma oranges with stems attached
- olive or vegetable oil
- a serrated knife
- a spoon
- matches
-
The stem of the Satsuma will be the bottom and base of the candle. Lightly score around the top 1/3 of the orange and peel the top off.
-
Gently separate the orange from the peel with the help of a spoon. Slowly work the spoon toward the bottom and pry the orange out from the sides. Make sure you don’t break through the peel.
-
The pith connecting the outer stem should remain once the flesh of the orange is removed. This will be the wick of the candle. Remove the outer stem with a pair of scissors so the candle can sit flat.
-
Pour a couple of tablespoons of olive oil into the orange and leave the tip of the pith exposed. Use the spoon to submerge the pith into the oil for a few seconds. It’s ready to be lit! **Tip: If you are having trouble lighting the orange it is too moist. Let the peel dry overnight and then submerge the top of the pith in the oil right before lighting.**
-
The candle should burn for a couple of ours depending on the length of the pith. Have fun!
