HMOTB of the week: Mat Kavanagh (20 photos) » hmotb-of-the-week-mat-0

Something tells me that Mat is going to make tons of new Berry and Chiver friends. He is free spirited and kind. We are honored to feature him as HMOTB of the Week!
I'll let him take it from here…
I guess I'll start off by saying my name right?
Hi! I'm Mat Kavanagh. Yes, there's only one T in my name, no, I'm really not sure why. I currently live in Calgary and was born and raised in a city east of Toronto called Pickering. Every summer of my life until University has been spent 2.5 hours north of here in a tiny town called Wilberforce (google it, I dare you). Living up there all summer is what made me who I am today. I love city life, but if I had to chose, I think i'd prefer the country.

Judging by the photos, I'm sure you probably guessed that I love being outside and active. Wakeboarding and Wakeskating, Snowboarding, Dirtbiking and working on engines are what kept me sane when I lived in the middle of a forest, for now I'm a little bit more pre-occupied with my education. I'm about to wrap up my fourth year in Environmental Site Remediation (A specific branch of Environmental Science) and a few weeks ago was offered a job at an engineering firm in Calgary. Since this is exactly what I wanted to come out of my education, I've decided to accept the offer and make the trek out west. Since I've grown up in one spot, had all the same friends and had my family close to me since I was a young kid, moving away from all of this is (and my dog :(...) a big step in life, but I figure, if there's a time to do it, what better time than now. The oil industry is booming... and unfortunately contaminating a lot of land, starting my career here and cleaning up the mess is the least I can do!

Unless you love chemistry you probably don't want to hear much more about that! So more about me. I have a passion for drums, guitar and music, I love my family (as I'd hope everyone does) and the environment. I've got a knack for being able to pull my way out of any awkward situation and have the ability to make pretty much anyone laugh. Sometimes it may get awkward but I value a good smile more than anything else... Laughing exposes it. My tragic flaw is that um... I'm not really sure... My nose is too big?

I'd also like to give my respect to last weeks HMOTB of the Week Tyler Gauchier for being such a trooper through all of his surgeries and his fight against cancer. I've recently lost family members to cancer and have had several other diagnosed and beat it as well. I'm aware of the physical and emotional strain that this terrible disease causes and want to say good work on having such a positive outlook on everything!

I think that's about all I have to write, don't want to keep going and bore everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read this and if you're in Calgary for the Centennial Celebration of the Calgary Stampede, feel free to message me on Facebook or Twitter, lots of you already have!

A Loyal Chiver,
