#15 i'm planning a round the world trip for a few years time with my fiancé (who will be my husband at that point) and we wanted to avoid Mexico/ central America due to risks of drugs/ violence/ crime… is it actually that bad or are we over thinking/ panicking a bit?

really depends on where you go. research the state department website. we recently went to Costa Rica- absolutely beautiful and we felt extremely safe there. Have fun!!!

I think you are making a good decision. If you think something odd is going to happen, you won't enjoy yourself fully when you are there always being on edge. Have a great time!

yeah we'd like to explore the world as it should be… i visited Tanzania a few years ago with a local church group and we went to villages that were miles from anywhere and it was a privilege to be able to live just how these people do every day, to really get to know them which is totally different and more heart breaking than the charity adverts…. overall, we'd like to avoid the large tourist areas to get a feel for the country and avoid spending silly money so i guess we should avoid this part of the world… thanks guys/gals!

That sounds amazing! I feel like the news exploits all the crime a bit too much, but there is always a risk everywhere you go. It really depends on where you go and I think tourists are always taken advantage of, just be safe and smart and you'll have an amazing trip!

yes, the media is a major issue… i don't really watch the news any more as it's all the same stuff and gets me more worried than is actually necessary… we only have a rough plan at the mo and will work out all the details at some point in the future… i just wanted to hear from people who have actually been there so i can understand what it's really like… thanks

Don´t worry my friend. I work at a web newspaper, so I have a lot of info of things around here or there. I know about US warnings all along.
Things are tought, not going to lie, but there´s no danger if you are careful and go to familiar/ concurred places. Those drug wars mostly happens in borders with US and desolated towns.
I have never experience something related with crime/ drugs figths, thank god.

i figured as much… thank you for giving me some info, this trip won't happen for a few years and i haven't really gone into too much detail/ research yet but it's nice to get a local's opinion so i have something to prepare us with

My photo! I have been to the Mayan riviera three times now. Would return tomorrow. Never felt unsafe, did not venture to anywhere sketchy but I would say its a part of the world worth seeing.
