I heard that the reason it is pink is because they did mining in that area and when they used chemicals it had a permanent effect on the environment. Seeing as it is cheaper to pay a fine for the destruction of an area than to pay the money to restore the environment back to its original state I can understand why it has remained pink. Not sure what chemicals were used in the first place to make it become pink however.
