Rihanna talked about Chris Brown during her Rolling Stone interview. She was definitely expecting the criticism… BUT

The singer said, “I decided it was more important for me to be happy, and I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way of that. Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it.”

It’s a controversial topic I don’t normally post about. I want to hear your thoughts though.

#7 I used to like her; I thought she was spunky and fun. Then she got really gross with her lyrics and the way she carries herself and poses in pictures. This whole thing with Chris Brown is just seamy. It's not okay to hit your girlfriend, but on top of that he seems like he's an all-around crappy human being. They gross me out.

#7 As someone who was in an abusive marriage, I honestly have no respect for her. By her going back to Chris, she's sending out a message that it's forgivable. It's not. It's never forgivable. There are women out there who left their abusive relationships (which is such a hard thing to do in the first place) and they look at her and think "well, she did it, no big deal". It disgusts me.

THIS exactly. it sets a dangerous example for young girls who look up to her. also, there is something to be said about forgiving because that you do for yourself and your own mental well being, but there is something dangerous in FORGETTING. she is choosing to forget or ignore what he did to her, and that is not ok.

To each his own. How many of us have made mistakes that our friends didn't quite understand? I know I've certainly have. I wish her well on her journey. She's young and she's GOING to make mistakes. But they're hers to make and learn from. I may not like it. You may not like it. However, in the end, these are her mistakes and it's her life. I wish her clarity to figure out what everyone else sees. I mostly wish for her to love herself more.

There are mistakes and then there are MISTAKES. I hear of mistakes my friends make all the time, but the minute one gets beat up like that by one of her boyfriends I will not just shrug my shoulders and look the other way.

#7 She needs counseling. I don't think she talked to anyone (it would have been in the media) after the incident happened. I've been in an abusive relationship and I was abused growing up, so I know why she went back and why she doesn't see it as a big deal. I'm not saying it's anyone else's responsibility, but she needs better people around her. The fact that her parents are okay with it is sad, but not surprising since her father was abusive. People keep saying they don't respect her for going back and she should think about her young fans, but the majority of abuse victims go back. It takes a lot to do it, and just bc you were strong enough to do so and not look back, doesn't mean everyone else does. I hope she gets the help she needs and that this saga doesn't end tragically.

And that's the super scary part that these people could procreate and are in a way endorsing this type of life. It's a cycle and you now young women are thinking well Rhiana's ok I might be too.

Why is it we all forget, she hit him first?! I'm NOT saying she deserved to get beat to a pulp, but their relationship is theirs to figure out. I'm sure there are a multitude of factors that us as undeserving outsiders do not (and should never) have access to that influenced her decisions. I respect her for going back and making decisions for herself despite all the media attention and as a fan, and a woman, I will support her in that.
As for how "gross" she got in her lyrics and the way she carries herself: she's young, she's independent, and she's figuring out who she is and who she wants to be. I LOVE it and can completely relate to it.

Thank you! I hate how everyone acts like they know exactly what happened. Yes Chris Brown is the highest of all duchebags, but both of them had anger issues. We don't know if she went to therapy and if they have spent a lot of time talking through things. Everyone always jumps to the worst conclusions. My dad used to be abusive with my mother but she got out. For the past 20 years he has made himself a better man but going to multiple anger management counseling sessions, therapy, religious services, and more; and he HAS changed. Although they aren't back together, both my mom and I have forgiven him because he has put in effort to become a better person. Personally i dislike the idea of her getting back with him, but she is going to make her own decisions and make her own mistakes. With the millions of people who watch and listen to her, she has obviously thought this through at least a little.

Honestly it doesn't matter what "really happened" because how can anyone really know. Which "credible" gossip site did you get that information from?
What matters is everyone knows (or thinks) she was abused by her boyfriend. She is aware of this. She is consiously making the choice to ignore the fact the she has countless young followers who could be easily influenced by her actions. Just knowing her choice is risking even one person getting into an abusive relationship again should be enough. It's a serious topic. Yeah yeah, maybe that's not her job, to look after the kiddies. Hopefully that's enough to help her sleep at night.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that she is first and foremost a human being. Leaving that relationship in the first place was hard but staying out of the relationship (for anyone) is at least as hard. Whether it was the right decision or not she can't be criticized for it just because she's supposed to be a "role model". She's a real person and her fans (or anyones for that matter) should have enough sense of their own to not blindly follow every decision she makes. No one is perfect.

#7- I was in an abusive relationship for a while, a few years back. I was ready to do the "right" thing and leave him (after an especially bad incident that resulted in a black eye and a split lip), but he talked me into staying. (I do want to specify that I'm a guy, it was a gay relationship, which unfortunately makes it a little less appalling to read "black eye and split lip," though abuse is abuse.) It wasn't long at all before it all started back up, leading to a 2-way restraining order, probation, lots of money spent on court costs, drug tests, etc.. While I learned so much about myself and what a healthy relationship really feels like, and I wouldn't trade that experience and knowledge for anything, I can't help but be thankful every day that we were not allowed to talk or see each other. It's SO easy to go back to someone you love and forgive what they've done, but people don't change like that. An abuser will always be an abuser, unless they are truly able to get help and learn about their issues. Chris Brown just seems like an all-around jerk and will probably never learn any different.

That said, it's not really my place to judge what Rihanna is doing with her life, though I do think it's a little disappointing that she is aware of her role in the spotlight and is still making this choice. Girls shouldn't look up to pop stars as role models, but the fact is, they do.

you are right, abuse IS abuse, and it being a gay relationship does not make it any less appalling. don't ever allow yourself or anyone else to think otherwise. someone you cared about hurt you physically. the sex of the people involved is irrelevant.

and congrats on making it out of the relationship and managing to find something positive in the whole experience. it takes a really strong person to make it through something like that, and an even stronger one to appreciate the lessons it has taught you.

#7 I have never been in an abusive relationship, and I so greatly respect those that have been able to walk away from one. I do, however, have a close friend who is currently in an abusive relationship and recently became pregnant. Although she says the hitting has stopped, it is easier for me to believe that she is only protecting his image. I used to say about Rihanna, "How could she be stupid?", but I now realize that it is not my place to judge her. I cannot begin to understand the reasoning behind the actions of one of my closest friends, much less a celebrity that I know nothing about. As far as Rihanna's behavior goes, it has led me to lose a great amount of respect for her as a lady.

#7 I've been in abusive relationships. I've been raped, drugged, beaten, blah blah blah. Bottom line, I understand what being in an abusive relationship feels like, and the mentality behind going back.
I understand her desire to believe he had managed to change in just a couple years, that he's gotten better and his pretty promises are just so perfect. It's easy to go back, it's easy to forgive them because it's so ingrained to "forgive and forget," especially with the games they play, the months or years they spend manipulating you and turning you into their ideal little doll.
It's easy for people who haven't had personal experience in these types of relationships to say, "Well, I wouldn't take him back!" and "I would've done X, Y, or Z!" Because you haven't experienced it. No, you actually won't do X, Y, or Z, because you love them. You'll try to reason with them, talk it out, then they'll promise they love you, they had no idea what came over them, they'll kiss you, call you sweetheart, and you'll take him back. It's something that in order to understand it, you sadly have to live through it.
I don't agree with her going back. I'm honestly scared for her, but I'm not going to be one to say I've lost respect for her, nor am I going to say that she'll, "get what she deserves for taking him back."
She is in the spotlight, she does have girls that idolise her, but this ishould be taken as an opportunity to talk about abusive relationships. She took back someone who abused her, because it's not only physical abuse, it's mental, too. There's manipulation and grooming involved. They know what to say, how to act, where your limits are and how to stretch them, and they somehow make you miss them. This is a time where we can talk about dangerous people, and instead of saying she's a terrible person for taking him back, fracking talk about it. Talk about why people take back their abusive partners, why it would be hard to keep Rihanna and Brown apart when they're in a community of fame so they constantly surround one another and how this would affect her space and development away from him. We should talk about the different types of abuse, and finding help and being able to talk about what we went through. That's what we can do instead of bitching about her going back.

I understand given the mindset it may be hard.
But her situation is different than most, people are influensed by her decision. I honestly don't judge women who go back. They, for whatever reason may not care enought about themselves to get out, maybe they don't think they deserve better, maybe they are hanging on to the past. Life can be hard. But when your life is in the spotlight, you have to do the right thing. Influence the people who look up to you positively. Her fans and their safely alone should be enough to motivate her. She is being immensely irresponsible.
