We have been sending Katie BERRY love for awhile now. In 2012 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She had to have a complete hysterectomy, partial bowel resection, and her appendix out. After her recovery she went through 6 rounds of chemotherapy and a trial drug infusion every week.
Her husband, Wil, reached out in 2013 to let us know that she was cancer free. Things were looking up. They were even going through the domestic adoption process. Just heard from him again. Katie’s cancer came back. She’s a fighter and is back at it undergoing surgeries and chemo… with a smile.
Wil’s update included:
“In mid-August, Katie showed some symptoms and went in for an exam after being cancer free for 18 months. Her oncologist found a tumor on her vagina. The biopsy revealed it was the same type cancer as 2 years ago and she underwent another major surgery on 8/21/14 (723 days after her first surgery but who’s counting?). The surgeons were able to remove the tumors on her vagina, but did see some spots on her bowels that were too small to remove surgically. She was in the hospital for 4 days (half as long as the first time), and is recovering well now at home, but still out of work for a few more weeks. She will undergo six 4-week cycles of chemo to fight off the smaller tumors that could not be surgically removed and had her first treatment last week.”
With goosebumps and tears in my eyes, I wrote him back and told him we would let all the Berries know she needs lots of extra love and prayers sent her way.
They put together Katie’s Tumornators team for the 5th annual Athena’s Run for GYN Cancers on October 4. They will be defending their team spirit award from last year. With theBERRY’s help, they raised over $7,000 in 2012, and $4,000 last year. This year they have already raised over $9,000, but want to raise even more. The Athena’s Run for GYN Cancers was started by her oncologist with all funds raised going towards supporting survivors, research for better testing and a cure, and screening for underprivileged minorities. XOXO and lots of BERRY love,
