The Internet is abuzz today following the release of the newest trailer for Pixar’s highly anticipated Finding Dory. Any unseen footage from the film is reason enough for excitement, but this preview in particular has people talking for an entirely different reason. The 2 and a half minute preview reveals that, for the first time in Disney-Pixar history, a lesbian couple may be featured in a film.
This isn’t the first time social media has taken action for the LGBT community in regards to Disney films. Earlier this month, a hashtag surfaced (#GiveElsaAGirlfriend) that urged writers to make Elsa of Frozen, the first lesbian princess in its upcoming sequel. Disney could be on its way to a more diverse and inclusive community of characters.
In the promo for the new film, there is a brief scene where a toddler drops her sippy cup after being knocked over by a baby stroller. We then see two women who appear to be a couple and one woman hands the cup back saying “Poor baby, let me get that for you.”
Though only a few seconds in length, this segment sent social media users into a whirlwind of speculation. Some voiced their support. According to US Weekly, one user wrote “If the rumors are true and the first lesbian couple in a disney movie ever is in #FindingDory YAY for a big important step to acceptance!!!!” while another commented on the backlash the trailer is receiving, “People are boycotting Disney because they show a lesbian couple in the Finding Dory trailer…Do they not know who voices Dory?!?”
Of course, the voice of the lovable main character is none other than the fabulous Ellen DeGeneres who famously came out as a lesbian in 1997.
No matter the controversy surrounding it, this animated sequel is sure to be a family favorite and a step in the right direction. Make sure to check out the full trailer for Finding Dory below and don’t miss it in theaters Friday, June 17.
