To be perfectly honest, I am far from what you would call a “morning person.” I would easily sleep all day if I could and getting up early is pretty much hell. However, inorder to have a life and a job that I love, I have to wake up.
One of my biggest saviors for an early morning is, of course, coffee AKA liquid life, but there are other ways to become a better morning person even without caffeine. I know, shocking. Hear me out, these are surefire ways to improve your morning mood. Now go out there and kick today’s ass!
1. Trim Down Your Days.
If you want to become a better morning person, start by cutting down on your evening activities. Anything that isn’t an absolute necessity can wait until tomorrow. Many of us tend to overcommit and overextend ourselves on a daily basis. There’s only so much one person can do and you’ll have to start saying “NO”. The sooner you can get to bed, the more rest you’ll have and thus feel much better in the morning.
2. Stock Up On Protein.
We’re all guilty of grabbing a cup of coffee and a piece of toast and calling it breakfast. Even if you aren’t hungry first thing in the morning, try introducing a little more protein into your diet. It will give you that little pep in your step you need to get going. Rebecca Scritchfield, R.D., a Washington D.C. based nutrition and exercise expert specializing in weight management says “After sleeping all night, our metabolism and blood sugar are at their lowest; we need a healthy breakfast to re-energize us.” She suggests trying a colorful fruit or veggie and a whole grain to start your day.
3. Make A Morning Playlist.
Personally, this is one of the only ways I can get up on the right side of the bed every morning. If you’re a music lover like myself, take the time to make a Spotify playlist of some of your favorite tunes that always put you in a good mood. Then, in the wee hours of the morning instead of hitting snooze on your alarm, press play on your music and you’ll be motivated to scoot that sleepy butt right on out of bed.
4. Get Some Exercise.
Even if you’re not much of a gym-enthusiast, try getting some exercise first thing in the morning. For me, that means leashing up my pup and taking a walk around the block (coffee in hand of course). You’ll be surprised at what a little fresh air and blood flow can do for your morning grogginess.
5. Braid Your Hair.
One of the biggest struggles in the morning routine, is getting that hair looking like you didn’t just wake up. Real Simple suggests braiding your hair either the night before (if it’s wet) or first thing in the morning. It’s a quick and easy way to get your hair styled and looking like you spent time on it even when you didn’t.
6. Let Natural Light Into Your Bedroom.
While blackout curtains can be an amazing way to block out the world and sleep all day, they can also mess with your natural body clock. Your brain is extremely sensitive to light and temperature. It knows when you’re supposed to be getting your ass out of bed, so let some natural light into your room and getting up won’t be such a struggle.
7. Prep The Night Before.
I can’t stress enough the benefits of prepping as much as you can the night before. Pick out your outfit (because lord knows that will take forever), get a thermos ready for coffee, pack up a breakfast to take with you, and you’ll be set to go in the morning. You will seriously be shocked at how much time this saves and how much your mood will improve if you’re not rushing around while half awake.
8. Use A Citrus Face Wash.
Face washes are another great way to start your day off on the right foot. Try a citrus or fruity scrub to help awaken your senses and get you going. It will make you feel like a new person and give you a nice clean canvas for your morning makeup.
9. Give Yourself A Pep Talk.
You got this! Tell yourself that the exhaustion will be worth it because you’re going to kick ass today and before you know it, you’ll be back home in the comfort of your warm bed. Also, try motivating yourself with a reward. “If I get up now, I’ll have time to stop at Starbucks”.
