Introverted TV Characters Who Will Make You Say “Same”

For better or for worse (but definitely for worse), we live in a society that favors extroversion. Everything from answering the door for the pizza guy to asking for a deserved raise to engaging in sober small-talk at a party can make introverts’ energy and joy wash away like a dislodged pebble in a stream of desperate escapism.

Still, introverts are becoming better and better represented, as the number of mainstream introverted TV characters seems to have skyrocketed in recent years, mirroring many of our own souls with their wine-guzzling hobbies, TV addictions, and complete refusal to go out on the weekends.

April Ludgate, weird introvert extraordinaire

April from “Parks and Recreation” is the queen of the introverts, and she would gladly accept the title, so long as she didn’t need to actually interact with anyone (and there was a cash prize.) Despite her icy interior, she is a strong-willed, loyal, and wildly funny character who acts as a sort of caricature for almost every emotion introverts feel on a day-to-day basis.

Best introverted quote:”I don’t want to do things. I want to not do things.”

Liz Lemon, quirky queen introvert

As is sometimes the case with writers, Lemon from “30 Rock” is not a lover of small-talk or, really, socializing in general. While she is effective and strong-willed at work, she relishes in staying home with ordered food she didn’t have to prepare and a glass of wine and sprite, preferably all alone.

Best introverted quote: “One of my New Year’s resolutions is to say ‘yes!’ Yes to love, yes to life, yes to staying in more!”

Rory Gilmore, book nerd introvert

Rory from “Gilmore Girls” remains a classic introvert example. She preferred to use her lunch breaks at Chilton to read by herself, she would always rather eat pizza than party (even on Spring Break), she counts books among her closest friends, and she spent most of her spare time hanging out with her mom (who, in her defense, is much cooler than any mom has the right to be.)

Best introverted quote: “I just take a book with me everywhere. It’s a habit.”

Nick Miller, genuinely disinterested introvert

Nick from”New Girl” thinks of himself as an old man in a younger man’s body, and this is quite representative of his character. He enjoys time to himself, tires easily, and tries to avoid getting involved in others’ drama or compromising his independence.

Best introverted quote: “I want to go in my room and do weird stuff on my computer.”

Alex Dunphy, too-smart-for-you introvert

In stark contrast to her older sister, Alex from “Modern Family” has never had the desire to go to a party, and much prefers to immerse herself in her own head. She is whip-smart, loves to learn, and often berates herself for her introversion until she comes to terms with it.

Best introverted quote: “Could you L a little less OL?”

So, know that you are not alone in your desire to be alone, and these “relatable-as-J-Law” characters totally reflect that.
