We all like to think that our parents trust us to some degree. I mean, they did raise their kids to be decent human beings (for the most part anyway), but they were also our age once so we can’t necessarily blame them when their suspicions take over.
It comes from a good place, the worry. I can’t even imagine how hard being a parent must be, but there are some times when you have to trust your kids because when you’re wrong they will not let you forget easily. That was the case for one high school student anyway, whose parents thought she was on not one, but pretty much every drug out there.
According to Buzzfeed News, 20-year-old University of Alabama student Rachel Gemis was almost sent to rehab over a faulty drug test when she was 16.
Gelmis attended a private high school which offered optional drug tests, as if private schools aren’t strict enough. Like any parent of a high school student, Gelmis’ mother Karen was concerned about her teen behavior and insisted the school test her. Neither Gelmis nor her mother could have anticipated the results.
The school told Gelmis’ mother that Rachel tested positive for pretty much every drug including pot, cocaine, heroin, and meth.
Needless to say both Gelmis and her mother were shocked.
“I was freaking out!” Gelmis told BuzzFeed News. “I was so scared. I kept racking my brain for a reason that I might have tested positive for everything, and I had no idea.”
Gelmis hadn’t used any of the drugs she came back positive for, but of course her mother still lost her mind at the thought of her daughter being under the influence. Like any supportive parent though, she immediately began discussing rehab options with her daughter.
Several hours passed before the school realized their mistake in reading the test results and discovered Rachel was completely clean. HOURS. Can you imagine? Just sitting there with your parents who think you’re a teen drug addict while you’re just trying to get through high school without losing your mind.
Rachel wasn’t about to let her parents forget this lack of trust so easily. In fact, her mother baked her this hilarious cake as an apology.
Gelmis admitted the clever cake was actually her idea. She and her mom are very close (much like my mom and I) and she thought this would be a comedic way to get past the uncomfortable confusion and assuage her mother’s guilt.
“We definitely bonded over it. We still talk about it a lot,” she said.
You might be wondering if this happened 4 years ago, why are we just now hearing about it?
Thanks to Facebook memories, Gelmis was reminded about the incident this week and she shared the story on Twitter.
She did not expect the now viral story to spread so quickly. Since sharing, it’s been retweeted more than 10,000 times.
Many people were shocked at the schools faulty test and failure to apologize.
Like us, another Twitter user admitted that their parents wouldn’t have let them survive until the correction.
Needless to say, Rachel won’t be letting this one go anytime soon.
