As if we don’t already spend enough of our money on coffee, the arrival of Starbuck’s most sought after seasonal beverages is causing a serious drain on our bank accounts. It’s just so incredibly hard to resist a grande PSL every morning before work, but the cost is starting to add up at an embarrassing rate.
What are we to do about this vice? Do they really expect us to drink normal run of the mill coffee? Fortunately, we have a few super secret money-saving Starbucks hacks up our sleeves and we might just be willing to share them with you. From one basic bitch to another, you’re welcome.
1. BYOC (Bring your own cup.)
Not only will you be helping out the environment by utilizing a reusable cup, but you’ll also save 10 cents off the price of your Starbucks drink. Every little bit counts!
2. Get a refill.
We know that sometimes one cup just isn’t quite enough. Any time throughout the day and on any size, you can refill your cup with brewed coffee for just 50 cents during the same visit. Pretty sweet deal right? Especially on those days when you really need an extra boost.
3. Order a short.
In case you didn’t already know, there’s actually a size that’s smaller than “tall” and it’s aptly called “short.” The “short” cappuccino, will have the same amount of espresso as the as its “tall” version and cost you less. A win, win.
4. Order your drink without milk.
This doesn’t mean you have to go completely sans milk. It just means you can avoid the extra cost of the barista pouring it in for you by adding it yourself with the free milk provided near the creamers and sugar. If you like iced lattes, ask for a triple espresso in a venti cup over ice, and then fill it with milk at the condiment bar. It’s a great way to get an iced latte for about $2.
5. Ask for ice on the side.
It’s no secret that when you order an iced beverage, the barista tends to fill your cup half way with ice. By asking for it on the side, you’ll end up getting more coffee, so you can get away with ordering a smaller size. More coffee = happier you.
6. Turn your trash into more coffee.
Most people don’t know that you can actually turn in used empty coffee bean bags, if you happen to have any lying around (or at your office), in exchange for a free tall hot or iced coffee. Who doesn’t love free?
7. Don’t forget your birthday treat.
If you sign up for the Starbucks reward program (registration is free), you’ll get a free drink when your birthday rolls around. You have up to 30 days to redeem your birthday coffee so maybe even wait a day or two and spoil yourself some more.
8. Split a Venti Frappuccino
A venti (24 ounces) frappuccino can set you back about $4. A tall (12 ounces) costs $3, so if you split the Venti Frappuccino into two tall cups and share one with a friend, you’ll be saving yourself $1 each. Score!
9. Get free whipped cream.
Surely by now you’ve seen the adorable videos of people pulling up in their cars with their dogs and asking for Puppiccinos. Starbucks will give your dog a free cup of whipped cream for his own little coffee treat, but you can also split it with your furry pal and top your own drink.
