The shorter, darker days of fall may make it harder to pull yourself out of bed in the morning to go to the gym or to drag yourself there in the evening after you’ve finished up at work. But if you legit love your workout, because it matches your personality and makes you feel like your best self, you’ll probably be less likely to skip out on it.
What better way to figure out your fall fitness plan than by looking at who you are ~astrologically~? Here, which workout you should be doing this season, based on your sign.
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Even as temperatures start to cool off, you’ll want to keep your fitness up. You probably love to run outside on especially brisk mornings, because it makes you feel like even more of a badass. Participating in competitive team sports—like soccer, kickball, or football—or one-on-one activities—boxing or fencing—get your adrenaline pumping, too. You love to win.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
As an earth sign, there’s nothing that calms you more than being out in nature. (Well, maybe being cozied up at home, on your couch, but sorry, that’s not a fitness plan.) You do best with low-impact, slow but steady, relaxing activities, so try a steady-paced power walk during which you can take in all the colors of the fiery fall leaves. Use a pedometer or FitBit to track your progress and heart rate. Or do some gardening—planting bulbs RN for the spring—doesn’t sound like a workout but could burn up to 400 calories an hour.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
You are innately social and are right at home with a big group of friends or classmates, so consider taking a Pilates or Barre class this fall. It’s rigorous and involved enough that you’ll be able to train your generally scattered energy on the tasks at hand, and it’ll also help you improve your concentration.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
You thrive when you’re able to squeeze in time for self-reflection, and as a driven cardinal sign, you’re a fan of sticking to a set schedule. For those reasons, you’d do well to commit to a regular yoga practice this fall. Whether you’re using an app (like Yoga Studio) or going to your neighborhood yogi’s class, getting your om on could help you better handle all that family time/holiday stress that’s coming down the pike.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
What do the queens of dance music—Madonna, Whitney Houston, JLo—all have in common? All were born with a bright Leo sun! Chances are you have some bold moves, and dancing is the perfect way to get your heart rate up while just having fun, which is totally your M.O. Try Zumba or hip hop dance aerobics, and you’ll be crowned the queen of the class in no time.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
At just about any given time on any given day (or, eesh, night), your mind is going a mile a minute. You need a fall workout that’s methodical and pragmatic, while also delivering results and empowering you. Hence why strength training is the way to go. You’ll be able to put that brain to use—visualizing the muscle you’re working and enjoying the detail-oriented aspects of the process like counting reps—and feel like a total badass when you’re done.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty, you’re a hopeless romantic, so incorporating some of that Venusian energy in your fitness routine is a must. An activity where you get to look as lovely as you move, like ballet, would be thoroughly on-point. You’ll want to take it super-seriously, but don’t worry too much—it’s more about being social and feeling ~balanced~ as opposed to preparing to try out for your local production of The Nutcracker!
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
The eighth house in astrology—which involves relationships and sex—is ruled by Scorpio, so there’s no doubt you crave human connection and getting super-intimate. So, no time like the present to grab your bae or FWB and try partner yoga, which could also double as foreplay and up your game between the sheets. Ballroom dancing would work, too, because you a.) love to look your best and b.) are naturally competitive.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
Your sign is ruled by Jupiter, the largest planet which, if it had a motto, would be, “Go big or go home.” For that reason, you’ve probably been at least intrigued by a workout like CrossFit or Barry’s Boot Camp, if not actually done it. You usually prefer to go adventuring outdoors—climbing a mountain up to an ashram, biking along the coast—but now that it’s getting cooler out, you’ll do well to have an indoor regimen, like one of those grueling workouts. Before it get too cold, though, consider horseback riding. Sags tend to be natural-born equestrians, so consider doing a ride through the pretty fall leaves.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
Once you’ve made up your mind to accomplish something, you go for it full force. So, you may want to start training for a race that’s happening in the early spring or plan a really intense hike. You’re also super-busy, though, because you work your ass off in all aspects of your life, so whatever plan you take on now, make sure to put it on your iCal and enlist some friends to join you and keep you accountable.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
The eleventh house of friendships and networks is ruled by Aquarius, so you’re a people person. You thrive on being around others, being part of a team, maybe working toward a common goal. You’d enjoy signing up for Cycle for Survival event that will be held this winter and then training by going to spin class regularly. You might also enjoy an self-image-boosting class like martial arts or kickboxing.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
Represented by two fish, you’re a water sign through and through. You just feel better and more centered when you’re near the water, so joining a gym with an indoor pool could be a wise investment. If you want to do something that allows you to stay dry (you know, sans sweat), consider a mind-body activity like Tai Chi, which will also help you find and maintain a sense of calm all season long.
