13 Disney Movies Planned For The Next 5 Years

Disney has been on an unstoppable roll with their abundance of live-action remakes and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Tbh, our inner child can barely handle all of the excitement. There aren’t many things in life more amazing than watching our favorite animated movies come to life on the big screens.

Needless to say, the creative minds over at Disney have dozens upon dozens of films set for re-imaginative production in the coming years, seven of which are due between May 2016 and December 2019 alone. These are just a few we are most excited about.

1. Alice Through The Looking Glass

After Tim Burton’s first live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland brought a whopping $1 billion to the box offices, a sequel was bound to happen. Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp return alongside Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Fry, Toby Jones, and in his final performance the late Alan Rickman.

Status: Opened in theaters May 27th

2. Genies

Ladies and gentlemen, we may finally discover the great mystery of how Genie got himself trapped in a lamp. Writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have put together a prequel to the Disney classic Aladdin that focuses solely on the endeavors of our favorite Genie. If only we could have Robin Williams back to narrate.

Status: In development as of July 2015, release date unscheduled.

3. Beauty And The Beast

Previously brainy witch of Hogwarts, Emma Watson stars alongside Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey in a live-action re-imagination of our Disney favorite Beauty and the Beast. While we can certainly anticipate Watson dominating the role of Belle, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the cast measures up. Ewan McGregor, Josh Gad, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci and Emma Thompson are just a few of the other big names on this classic remake.

Status: Opens in theaters March 17, 2017

4. Cruella

One of my personal Disney favorites 1o1 Dalmatians is getting a villainous re-make that will center around the infamous Cruella de Vil played by Emma Stone. Though no one can really top Glenn Close, we’re sure Stone will do the role justice.

Status: Confirmed, expected in the next 3 years

5. Mary Poppins

We never realized what an uncanny resemblance Emily Blunt bears to a young Julie Andrews until talks of her role in the upcoming Mary Poppins remake. Director Rob Marshall (Into The Woods) reunites with Blunt for this revolutionized take on a classic Disney tale about a good-natured nanny adventuring around London.

Status: Confirmed

6. Dumbo

The world’s most adorable giant-eared elephant makes his return to the big screen through the dark imagination of Tim Burton alongside talented writer Ehren Kruger.

Status: Confirmed, expect it sooner than later

7. Mulan

Disney’s 1988 classic tale of the brave Fa Mulan is getting a long overdue live-action treatment and we couldn’t be more excited. Writing is said to be at the hands of Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, but no director has been named yet.

Status: In development as March 2015

8. Maleficent 2

Though the first Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie had somewhat mixed reviews, Disney has decided to move forward with a sequel. Of course, Jolie is set to return with Linda Woolverton (Alice Through the Looking Glass) working on the script.

Status: Confirmed, expected soon

9. Prince Charming

According to Movie Pilot, the premise for this Disney remake focuses less on the actual Prince Charming and more so on his brother “who has struggled to compete thanks to a lack of a charm.” Think of him as the antithesis of Charming, a “Prince Rotten” if you will.

Status: In development as of July 2015, release date unscheduled.

10. The Sword In The Stone

Game of Thrones fans rejoice! A recently discussed re-make of the 1963 animated flick The Sword in the Stone is said to be coming from the imaginative mind of GOT writer Bryan Cogman. Looks like Disney could be getting a serious dose of dragons (minus the tits.)

Status: In development as of July 2015, release date unscheduled.

11. Tinker Bell

Writer Victoria Strouse (of the recent Disney sequel Finding Dory) is set to be taking on a live-action reimagination of the one and only Tinkerbell. The undeniably adorable Reese Witherspoon is said to play the spunky little Tink, but a director for the film has yet to be confirmed.

Status: Confirmed

12. Winnie The Pooh

Not going to lie, I definitely let out multiple squeals when I heard about a real-life Pooh bear. Movie Pilot says though details are sparse, “we do know that it focuses on Christopher Robin and could be slightly more adult themed in comparison to the animated classic.” Tbh, I’ll probably cry during this entire movie.

Status: In development as of April 2015, release date not yet scheduled.

13. A Wrinkle In Time

From the creative minds that brought us Frozen and Selma, comes an imaginative remake of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time. More information about the details and cast of the film have yet to be released, but Disney would be remiss to pass up this collaboration.

Status: Confirmed, to be expected soon
