Last night, everyone’s favorite actor-whose-personality-overshadows-their-decent-career, Tom Cruise, made an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden to promote his upcoming movie, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. While he was on the show, Cruise made time to participate in the “Role Call” game, where he essentially recreated the majority of his iconic movie roles.
From Top Gun, to Cocktail, to Jerry Maguire, to the Mission: Impossible series, pretty much every notable Tom Cruise movie was present and accounted for — although The Outsiders was notably and unforgivably OMITTED.
There were cheap wigs, there were abrupt costume changes, there was green screen madness, there was utter chaos — and the whole thing was honestly pretty enjoyable.
While many of the reenactments were somewhat predictable, the Jerry Maguire “Show me the money” moment was interrupted by a surprise appearance from Cuba Gooding Jr. to reprise his iconic role (thereby reminding all of us that neither Tom Cruise nor Cuba Gooding Jr. has aged in the last twenty years).
Regardless of whether you are a self-professed Tom Cruise fan, or a just a passively-familiar audience member, the whole montage drives home the point that Cruise has the capacity to be exceptionally charming when he isn’t jumping on couches or speaking at an International Association of Scientologists event.
That said, I will never forgive him for reenacting the Risky Business scene and NOT TAKING HIS PANTS OFF.
What is this, amateur hour?
