10 Beauty Product Must-Haves For New Moms

Everything changes once you become a mom. Suddenly, there’s twice as much laundry, and you’re only getting four hours of sleep a night. Everything you own is covered in spit-up, and you can barely find time to wash your hair, let alone style it or apply a full face of makeup.

With new motherhood comes the urge to simplify everything, and that includes your beauty routine. Some days you might get a full hour to yourself, thanks to a visit from a generous friend or in-law, but other days, you’ll be utterly exhausted and only have 5 minutes to brush your teeth and swipe on some lotion.

No matter what, there are a few essential items you can add to your makeup bag to make new mom life so much easier. Here, some beauty must-haves for those busy and tiring early months with a new baby.

1. Amazing concealer for covering those dark circles.

The lack of sleep that accompanies a newborn is basically torture, and it wreaks serious havoc on your ability to not look like a zombie. To combat the dark circles of doom, you need a concealer that’s light but still provides full coverage, like this treat and conceal formula by Miracle Skin Transformer.

2. Bronzer to make up for the fact that you haven’t seen the sun in days.

So, you’re rocking that whole paler-than-ghosts look. That’s okay. You just need to sun-kiss your paleness with a little bronzer and blush, preferably in a single palette like this one from NARS for quick application.

3. A hydrating hair serum for air drying.

You might have time to squeeze in a shower, but a blowout and styling? Forget about it. Air drying is your new go-to, so you need a balm or spray that will help you get a sleek finish and avoid looking like a frizz ball. Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm by IGK certainly does the trick for my rowdy locks.

4. A bright lip color you don’t need to reapply.

Taking care of a newborn doesn’t leave much time for style, but it’s still important to feel confident in how you look. Bold lip colors are my go-to for looking chic and put together, even when I don’t have much time to spare. Go for a stain, like this one from Yves St. Laurent, so you don’t have to waste time on touch-ups.

5. A little something to help with the hair loss.

Your hair is going to fall out like crazy postpartum. I know that’s devastating to hear, but it’s the truth. Postpartum hair loss can last for up to a year. Things like rosemary and tea tree oil are rumored to stimulate hair growth, so it’s worth it to invest in a conditioning scalp oil, like this one by Earth’s Nectar. At the very least, you’ll be taking good care of the hair you’ve still got.

6. Tinted moisturizer for when you don’t have time for full makeup.

Sometimes you’ve got an early appointment at the pediatrician and moisturizing is the only step you have time for. In those instances, you want something that’ll give your complexion a little boost. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to work, which is why I prefer a relatively cheap BB cream like this one from Cover Girl.

Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend had obviously never heard of mascara. Giving your lashes a little love helps you look more well-rested and put together—things you need when you’re struggling through the sleepless nights of new motherhood. This 4-in-1 by Tarte lengthens, curls, volumizes, and conditions your lashes, so you look professionally made up AF in one swipe.

Pregnancy causes major skin changes, and the lack of sleep, nutrition, and time for self care that comes with having a newborn can really take its toll on your face. You don’t have time for a hardcore, multi-step skin repair regimen, but you’ll probably be able to squeeze in something like this energizing mask by Bliss a few times a week.

9. A combo palette for quick and easy application.

For most moms, developing a makeup routine that only takes 5-10 minutes is a must. To do that, you need something that has all the basics readily available, like this Bobbi Brown eye, cheek, and lip palette. It has a shadow, bronzer, blush, a lip color, an extra large mirror, a blush brush, and a lining brush, so you can put on a full face without having to switch products.

If you’re going to take the time to put on makeup, then do the extra step of setting it. All you need is a light finishing spray, like this one by Urban Decay. When you’re headed into battle with a baby, you need something stronger than powder to set your look.
