Although The Ellen Degeneres Show was filmed on Tuesday afternoon, before the results of the 2016 Presidential Election were announced, the titular host felt compelled to address her viewers with a message of hope and unity — regardless of the outcome of the race.
“People have been very passionate about this race,” Degeneres observed. “And I think it’s because we all love our country ― we just have different ideas about what’s best for it, which is part of what makes America great.”
Wearing a sweatshirt embroidered with the word “Love,” Degeneres said that she firmly believed that, following the election results, there was one idea that everyone should get behind: the notion that, “if you take away the labels, you realize that we are far more alike than we are different.”
She describes how every one of us, regardless of our political affiliations, knows the feeling of getting out of the shower and not having a towel. How we’ve all fallen asleep on the couch watching Netflix, and woken up in the middle of an entirely new season. How, apart from our political leanings, we are all basically just trying our best every day.
“What I’m trying to say is that, we have so much in common, our differences actually make us stronger. We need to have … kindness and respect for one another.”
Her only exception to that rule? The people who leave their shopping carts in the middle of an empty parking spot.
She then showed a montage of inter-species animal friendship, as a not-so-subtle reminder that it’s possible to coexist with people whose way of life is vastly different from your own.
Thank goodness. After all of the negativity, I have a feeling that we all need to see some footage of a puppy playing with a raccoon.
