For a little girl, few things are more exciting than playing dress-up in your mother’s clothes. I remember going into my mom’s closet and trying on everything from her prom dress to her shoes to old suits with shoulder pads she wore before I was born. For most kids, dress up doesn’t have a purpose other than just playing around, but when one 4-year-old put on her mother’s wedding dress a few weeks ago, it was for something far more sacred than just make-believe.
Nora Davis fulfilled her mom’s dying wish to have the little girl photographed in her cherished wedding dress.
According to Today, Amber Davis, was diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer in 2014. The mom of three passed away just a year and a half later at the age of 27.
Before she died, Davis saw a photograph of a little girl wearing her mom’s wedding dress and told her good friend, photographer Heidi Spillane, she wanted to recreate the shoot with her daughter, Nora.
“Amber wanted the session to be a beautiful and fun moment for Nora,” Spillane explained to Berry. “She wanted it to be a way for her little girl to feel connected to her mom while also being pampered.”
Davis unfortunately didn’t live to see her wish fulfilled, but a few weeks ago, the shoot finally took place, and the stunning photos are going viral.
For the shoot, Nora wore her mother’s gorgeous lace gown, with light makeup and her hair styled just like her mom’s was on her wedding day. The photos were taken at The Hitching Post in North Carolina, where Davis and her husband, Derek, got married. Spillane then posted them on the Facebook page for her business, My Three Arrows Photography, where they’ve been shared hundreds of times.
“I’m so overwhelmed and humbled by the attention this story and my photographs are getting,” Spillane told Berry. “Knowing Amber, she would have been so excited to see her little beauty’s photos being shared. It makes me miss her so much more wishing I could have shared this moment with her.”
Spillane said the photoshoot was emotional, but also an incredibly fulfilling way to pay tribute to a friend she loved dearly. “The session was beautiful,” she recalled. “Seeing Nora so proud and happy to be in her mommy’s gorgeous dress—seeing that little girl’s joy just reminded me of why we were there.”
The photos are bittersweet in Amber Davis’ absence, but they’re also a unique keepsake and a memory that little Nora will get to treasure forever. You couldn’t ask for a better way to pay tribute to the unbreakable connection between a mother and her daughter.
