If you woke up with a serious case of the Mondays today, it might be time to put things in perspective.
Here are some individuals who had a much rougher weekend than you did, and probably need a pretty stiff drink right about now — so stop your whining and just be thankful, mmkay?
1. Mark Zuckerberg
Okay, perhaps not Zuckerberg specifically. But, Facebook has been the subject of serious derision this weekend. First, there are the criticisms about the barrage of fake news stories that are populating Facebook news feeds, many of them from hyper-partisan websites (you probably noticed some news stories on your feed this election season which sounded suspiciously like National Enquirer articles). Then, there was the embarrassing event on Friday, where Facebook accidentally assumed that a large number of its living users were dead, and posted “In Memoriam” banners on their Facebook pages. While this bizarre turn of events was admittedly kind of hilarious, it was also, in one Facebook spokesperson’s words, “terrible.”
You may need to take a day off and go relax, Facebook. You’re not looking so good.
2. Donald Trump
Regardless of your political leanings, I think we can all agree that Donald Trump probably had a totally sh*t weekend. Why? Because he’s just now realizing all of the responsibilities he’s going to have to take on once he assumes the role of President of the United States. According to the New York Times, Trump didn’t even fully realize that he would have to hire his own White House staff once the Obama administration ends.
The election may have appealed to Trump’s sense of competition, but it’s becoming painfully obvious that the weight of the world will come to rest on his shoulders — and he may or may not be up to the arduous task.
Yep. Looks like ol’ Donny probably needs a drink.
3. Megan Markle
The actress, best know for her role on USA’s Suits, has gained increased traction in the public eye due to recent reports of her relationship with Prince Harry. While it’s fantastic that these two seem to be dating happily, dating a royal is proving to be somewhat hazardous to Markle’s reputation. The actress has already been dragged through the mud by various members of the British press, who were quick to note that Markle is biracial. There have even been reports of topless Snapchat pics featuring Markle, which were allegedly leaked over the weekend.
Kensington Palace was forced to release a statement on the issue, which reads:
… Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a national (British) newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.
Sorry, Megan. The internet is a terrible and disgusting place. Congratulations on your seemingly happy relationship, though!
4. James Comey
The director of the FBI has certainly slogged through his fair share of insults these past few months, particularly when he chose to reopen the Clinton email investigation at the peak of the 2016 presidential election (an incident which is credited in securing Trump’s election victory). Not surprisingly, it now looks like Comey has officially made his way onto Clinton’s Sh*t List.
At the end of this past week, Clinton sent out an email to her staffers which read:
We believe that we lost this election in the last week. Comey’s letter in the last 11 days of the election both helped depress our turnout and also drove away some of our critical support among college-educated white voters—particularly in the suburbs. We also think Comey’s 2nd letter, which was intended to absolve Sec. Clinton, actually helped to bolster Trump’s turnout.
Yep. Looks like Comey will be receiving some serious side-eye from Clinton supporters for the foreseeable future.
5. Pretty much any minority group
Regardless of your political leanings, the hate crimes toward minority groups since Trump’s win on November 8th have been especially distressing — and the disturbing news stories just keep coming. From the Muslim teacher who was told by a student that she should “hang herself” with her hijab, to the stars of Silicon Valley who were harassed by Trump supporters in an LA bar, the flames of hatred directed toward women, people of color, and members on the LGBTQ community have seemingly been stoked by Trump’s rise to power. Whether you consider yourself to be a liberal, conservative, or anywhere in between, this behavior isn’t condoned by any accepted codes of morality.
Minorities had a totally sh*t weekend. And, let’s be honest, last week was terrible, too. Maybe we can all work to do better this week and try to keep one another other safe, regardless of our feelings about the election.
