It may have taken 40 years, but 60-year-old actress Carrie Fisher has finally confirmed what many of us suspected all along: she had an affair with costar Harrison Ford on the set of Star Wars: A New Hope.
The actress reveals details of the tryst in her upcoming book, The Princess Diarist. Fisher met Ford on set in 1976 — he was a 33-year-old married father of two, and she was a 19-year-old ingenue just beginning her career.
(Which is kind of creepy and sleazy, to be honest, but hey, it was the seventies, man!)
Their affair began when Ford apparently offered to drive a “wine sodden” Fisher home after a birthday party for director George Lucas. Naturally, they the two found themselves in bed together.
Fisher says that after their first night together, however, she felt a tad insecure. “I looked over at Harrison. A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow,” she writes in her book. “How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?”
The affair continued for three more months, which Fisher describes as “intense.”
“It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend,” she tells People.
She does reveal that Harrison often poked fun at her for being a “bad kisser.” Fisher also writes that their first time in bed together wasn’t exactly spectacular, but it was overshadowed by the fact that “he really was handsome.”
“I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him,” she says. “He was kind.”
While it seems pretty clear in retrospect that Ford was never interested in anything more than a fling, Fisher tried relentlessly to make him fall in love with her. She fantasized that he would leave his wife, and ask her to marry him with a “gold band with diamonds (inscribed) ‘Carrison.”’
That exact scenario didn’t pan out, although Ford did end up divorcing his wife, Mary Marquardt, three years later.
And if you’re looking for more juicy details than that, well, you may be disappointed: Fisher admits she can’t recall much of the illicit romance, thanks to “the brutal strength of Harrison’s preferred strain of pot.”
Thus far, Ford himself has refused to comment on Fisher’s reveal of the affair (although he has received a copy of the book).
While it isn’t exactly surprising that Han and Leia engaged in some real-life romance (however brief), you can bet that there are some avid fan-fiction writers out there who are jumping for joy right about now.
