If you were cognizant during the early 2000s, then you were well-aware of perhaps the most infamous couple’s outfit of all time: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching denim outfits at the 2001 American Music Awards.
Don’t pretend you don’t remember — the images of Justin in his denim cowboy hat, and Britney in her denim bustier are burned into your brain.
During a recent appearance on the Australian entertainment show, The Project, Timberlake relived the cringe-worthy fashion moment when one host asked him,”What have you learned about the [music]
industry that you didn’t know when you were in ‘NSYNC?”
His expert response? “If you wear denim-on-denim, it will get documented.”
Justin also explained that the dual denim wasn’t even the most outrageous fashion mistake he made during the aughts. “Did you see the outfits (*NSYNC) wore?! It was just … It was such a crazy time,” he said. “The world was different. The music industry was different.”
In reference to the denim-on-denim fashion trend, one host said, “I heard it’s coming back!”
Just smartly replied with, “You know what, I don’t even think I could bring that back,” before quickly admitting, “If it’s worn properly (it could be brought back).”
When the hosts asked him who would wear the denim trend next, Timberlake’s only response was “Not Donald Trump.” (Which is probably a fair assertion, but hey, you never know).
While the dual denim might not get its red carpet heyday ever again (God willing), we can still reminisce about the days when this couple’s outfit was the most confusing incident in trending current events.
It was a happier time, wasn’t it?
