No matter where they grocery shop, every hummus fan has bought Sabra at one point or another. The go-to brand is everywhere. Which is just one reason why it’s super-freaky that they’ve issued a recall of 57 varieties of their products—aka almost everything they make—due to Listeria contamination concerns. Listeria monocytogenes was identified at the manufacturing facility but not in tested finished product, according to the FDA.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Listeria is no freakin’ joke.
It’s linked not only to symptoms like high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, but also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. It could also lead to “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” notes the FDA.
Basically, it’s easier to say what Sabra has not recalled vs. what they have.
The recall covers everything except Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole, and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips. You can get a complete list of the recalled products off of the FDA’s release. The company’s encouraging customers to toss any product with a “Best Before” date up through January 23, 2017. The affected products were distributed to retail outlets, including food service accounts and supermarkets, in the U.S. and Canada.
Sabra made the right move.
Even though Listeria wasn’t found in Sabra’s tested finished product, the company did exactly what they should have done. Yeah, it’s not really the best PR for them, but a bunch of people getting sick—or way worse, given those scary AF warnings from the FDA— from their favorite snack would’ve been nightmarish.
The company aimed to reassure customers even further, issuing the following statement on their website yesterday:
We have invested heavily in technology and enhancing our processes and protocols, with guidance and input from external experts, to develop and put in place industry-leading food safety procedures, such as testing finished product from the production line every two minutes for pathogens including listeria. We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants. We are taking action because consumer safety is a top priority.
