We all have our beauty go-tos—the makeups, lotions, and potions that we use everyday and could basically do in our sleep. What can we say? We’re creatures of habit. But around the holidays, it’s fun to do it up a little in the hair and makeup departments—you know, deviate ever-so-slightly from our bronzer/mascara/dusty rose lipstick routines without going too over-the-top.
If you want to bust out a different look at the office Christmas party this year, but don’t want roll in looking like Kylie Jenner’s doppelganger, here are 11 subtle changes that will reap big rewards.
Everyone will know something’s different about you, but they won’t know what.
1. Give the smudgy, smokey, cat eye a go.
When done properly, a cat eye looks stunning. But also, it’s so… intense. If you don’t feel comfy with gobs of liquid liner on your face—or more likely, don’t think you can pull it off—try it’s slightly drunk cousin: The smudgy, smokey cat eye. Spoiler alert: If you mess up, no one will have a clue.
2.Use false eyelashes.
If you do one thing and one thing only to amp up your beauty routine for a night out, please (please!) go with false eyelashes. Few things will make your eyes pop—or look more flirtatious—than a set of falsies. And if you’re worried about looking like a Real Housewife, go with the individual lashes, which are much more natural-looking than the strips.
3. Change your part.
Always wear your hair split down the middle? Try sweeping it to the side. Switching up your part can make for a big beauty change—without setting foot in the salon. Yasss.
4. Try the long nail thing.
The long nail trend is far from practical if your life involves anything other than taking selfies and checking Instagram, but for a night—hell, a couple of hours!—it could be kind of fun.
Bold lips aren’t for everyone because, well, they don’t look good on everyone. But if you’ve had an itch to try an over-the-top lip for a night out, try this trick: Put the lipstick on your finger and blot it on your lips, or apply a small bit to the center of your lips and smudge it around with your finger. It will give you the “bold lip look,” but it’ll be a little softer, which works for almost anyone.
If, after a glass or two of “getting ready champagne,” you want to go for something more daring, get in touch with your inner Kardashian by overdrawing your lip line, which is pretty much as easy as it sounds.
7. Go for the subtle contour.
Contouring obviously goes a long way, but it can also produce seriously drastic results—which isn’t ideal for everyone. If you want to add a little somethin’ somethin’ to your party makeup, try the subtle contour, which only requires three products and doesn’t completely change what you look like.
8. Ombré your lips.
Ombré hair may be kind of passé, but ombré lips are going strong. Instead of reaching for your stand-by lip gloss (or trying a bold lip, like 99 percent of people around the holidays), try making your lips light in the middle and more pronounced on the outside.
9. Get sprayed.
If you err toward the more natural look, but want to kick up your beauty game this season, a light, shimmery spray tan—worn under a winter white shirt, of course—is the perfect way to do that. If anyone asks, you just got back from Puerto Vallarta.
10. Glitterize your eyes.
Swap out your standard eyeshadow—if you wear any—for its more festive counterpart. It’s a little change, but it’ll definitely make your eyes pop more. And what better time to sparkle than the holidays?
11. Rock a braid crown.
If you wear your hair down and loose every day of your life, people are going to automatically assume you’re going to wear it down and loose to your New Year’s Eve party. Send your friends for a loop by showing up with this much-easier-to-do-than-it-looks braid crown. Just don’t be surprised if you’re called “Heidi” after your buds get their buzz on.
