Our first full week of 2017 is coming to a close and we have to admit, things are already starting to look better than they did last year. Yes, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is still our president-elect, but there are also several other human beings that are making us appreciate the world we live in.
In 2016, curating our list of people that make us want to say “Hell yeah” became difficult, there just wasn’t a whole lot of greatness to choose from. Fortunately, this year we’re having quite the opposite dilemma; there are so many we’re having trouble narrowing it down.
Below are just a select few of the many that have been our saving grace this week and are giving us hope for the new year.
1. Chris Pratt
First on our list of truly kick-ass people this week is the undeniably gorgeous Chris Pratt. The Passengers star was recently featured in a cover shoot with Vanity Fair and the photos are almost too arousing to handle. However, it’s not his chiseled physique or photogenic nature that earned him a spot on today’s list.
Pratt posted a few photos from the shoot on his personal Instagram account along with some hilariously self-depreciating captions that remind us it’s important not to take yourself too seriously and we could not love him more for it. Take this photo for instance, what looks like a stunningly handsome man in nature Pratt describes as an unfortunate incident where he was trapped between two rocks and the photographer had to save him.
We would save you Chris, anytime.
One more still from the @vanityfair photo shoot. I have to credit the brilliant photographer @markseliger who discovered me wedged between these two rocks. It took him all day to pull me out. I had been stuck there for hours. I had barely enough strength to stare pensively into the distance. I mean, it was bad. Anyways. I almost had to chew off the lower half of my body to get out. But I'm not flexible enough. Bottom line. I could have died. But thanks to the brilliant photographer @markseliger I'm alive to tell the story, which is currently being optioned for a movie.
2. Tyler Boone
Next up, is this truly amazing 10-year-old boy by the name Tyler Boone who the world frankly, doesn’t deserve. Boone’s 12-year-old friend Gabby Ruiz was diagnosed with Alopecia areata, an autoimmune skin disease which causes hair loss when she was 4. Since real hair wigs are typically pretty expensive, Gabby usually wears a headband or hat without anything underneath.
When Tyler met Gabby about 3 years ago, he noticed that she was extremely shy and kindly asked her mother what he could do to make Gabby feel better. Once Tyler realized that Gabby was unable to grow hair, he decided to grow his own out and donate it to her for a wig. According to BuzzFeed News, “it took him two years to grow the required ten inches of hair necessary for the non-profit Children With Hair Loss to make a wig, but Tyler persevered.”
When the day finally came, Gabby did the honors of cutting Tyler’s hair and in just a few weeks Children With Hair Loss will be able to fashion Tyler’s generous gift into a wig for Gabby. If their sweet story doesn’t make you say “hell yeah,” we don’t know what will.
3. Shannen Doherty
Back in August of 2015, Shannen Doherty revealed to her fans that she had been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. However, the Beverly Hills, 90210 actress has refused to let this diagnosis get her down and has bravely continued to kick cancer’s ass while sharing updates on her condition via social media.
After undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Doherty started radiation treatment in November. This week, she decided to celebrate nearing the end of her treatment by dancing to Pitbull’s “Fuego” alongside celebrity trainer, Jäm Malibu on Instagram for the whole world to see and it was amazing.
“Radiation is tiring. It builds up within you and sometimes one just struggles to keep their eyes open. You can see how tired I am here but I’m still moving!! Any movement is so good during treatment, not just for the body, but for your mind as well. #cancerslayer”
4. This mom of quadruplets
Next up on our list of truly phenomenal human beings this week is this hilariously honest mother of 4. Yes, 4 as in quadruplets. Being a parent is a full-time, 24/7 job and while it is one of the most rewarding, it can also be one of the most exhausting. This is why we can’t help but deeply appreciate Ashley Gardner’s brutally honest insight on raising quadruplets.
According to Cosmo, in a video posted on Facebook and YouTube Tuesday, “Gardner can be seen hiding out in her pantry, trying to get a moment of peace away from her children in order to survive the rest of the day.” The struggle is real.
“Dad’s out shoveling the driveway and Mom desperately needed a treat to get through the rest of the night,” she says in the video while chewing on a piece of candy. “So I’m hiding in the pantry eating a treat. Is that wrong?”
No mam, that’s motherhood.
5. Michelle Obama
Last, but certainly not least on our list this week is the stunning and inspirational, soon-to-be former First Lady Michelle Obama. Though we are weary about what the political future of the United States may hold, we are more than eternally grateful for the philanthropic, emboldening, and gracious footprint Michelle has left on the White House.
In her emotional final speech given this morning, Michelle thanked her supporters saying, “being your first lady has been the greatest honor of my life and I hope I’ve made you proud.”
She went on to emphasize the importance of unity and acceptance in our youth’s culture, a community she has always been outwardly passionate about.
“I want our young people to know that they matter, that they belong. So don’t be afraid. You hear me, young people? Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourself with a good education. Then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of you boundless promise. Lead by example with hope; never fear.”
Amen. We will miss you, Michelle.
