Gender stereotypes dictate that men are supposedly inept at any sort of domestic task, particularly those which are often associated with Home Economics classes. Luckily, there are guys out there who are secure enough in their masculinity to realize that gender roles are imaginary constructs, and that learning these some of these domestic skills can come in really handy — particularly when you’re proposing to the love of your life.
Imgur user Jel2930 went the distance to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Cara: he sewed an entire ballgown for her, inspired by Belle’s dress from Beauty and the Beast.
He posted photos from the process to Imgur, describing his inspiration. “This is Cara, my best friend and partner in crime,” he wrote, “She grew up admiring Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Wanting to recreate the famous scene, I decided to make her the dress to coincide with my proposal.”
The whole thing began rather humbly, with nothing more than a petticoat. “This is how the project began, in a basement with a cheap sewing machine and a dream. And coffee. Lots of coffee.”
Jel2930 writes that, although he was comfortable with the general sewing process, he was concerned about his finesse — or lack thereof. “Sewing? Easy. Sewing well? Not so much.”
He constructed the skirt first, in all of its gold, draped glory …
… before moving on to the bodice and sleeves.
Amazingly, the final product turned out great, and fit Cara like a glove.
In a proposal move that would have made Belle proud, Jel2930 popped the question in the Periodical Room of the Parks Library at Iowa State.
The dress may have been the star, but the ring was certainly no slouch.
Naturally, Cara said “yes” (to both her fiancé and the dress). “Lights, music, library, dress, ring. Couldn’t ask for more,” Jel2930 wrote.
And yes, in case you were wondering, the dress had exceptional twirling capabilities.
Congrats to this happy pair, who are proof that not all Beauties end up with Beasts.
