Emily Ratajkowski Thinks Your Melania Trump Slut-Shaming Is Bullsh*t

Model, actress and all-around professional beautiful person Emily Ratajkowski has recently addressed the various sexist media reports regarding First Lady Melania Trump. Spoiler alert: she’s not having any of it.

Ratajkowski took to Twitter yesterday after an encounter with a New York Times reporter left her with a bad taste in her mouth. The journalist reportedly referred to Melania as a “hooker,” a term which understandably caused Ratajkowski to bristle.

Although Ratajkowski was a vocal Bernie supporter during the primaries, she asserted that party divides and political beliefs are irrelevant when it comes to “slut-shaming” other women. In her opinion, this view of Melania is sexist and entirely unacceptable — regardless of your feelings about the current President.

The anonymous journalist in question has apparently been reprimanded for the brash comment.

“The comment was not intended to be public,” the Times told  Politico. “But it was nonetheless completely inappropriate and should not have occurred. Editors have talked to the reporter in question about the lapse.”

Melania Trump herself commended Ratajkowski for the remarks on Twitter, applauding her for standing up for other women. (Although the hashtag #PowerOfTheFirstLady is kind of baffling.)

Regardless of your feelings about the Trump family (or Ratajkowski, for that matter), we can likely all agree that shaming the First Lady for her rumored sexual history is not only irrelevant to the matters at hand, it’s also a vicious and sexist double-standard. Even last year’s widespread release of Melania’s nude photoshoot from when she was 25 was in poor taste, because it honestly had nothing to do with Trump’s campaign, and assumed that any woman posing naked must have questionable moral fiber.

Consider how Trump has proudly boasted about his previous sexual liaisons with other women. These remarks, while frowned upon by many, certainly did nothing to ruin his reputation or chances of success — even when he made comments that were actually problematic, like forcibly grabbing women by the groin.

Basically: just because you don’t like or agree with Trump does not mean that you must malign Melania and pick apart her sexuality in the process. There are plenty of other valid reasons to dislike the Trumps, but Melania’s sexual history is not one of them.

And if you believe the Melania slut-shaming is justified, perhaps you should consider the possibility that, despite your personal politics, you might just be a lil’ bit sexist!
