Tattoo addicts are constantly looking for fresh, new ways to ink themselves — and it looks like they finally found one.
Enter helix tattoos. These tiny tattoos are inked along the upper outer curve of your ear, for a delicate design that you can hide or display as needed. The only catch is that this hip, new trend actually requires applying a tattoo needle to the highly sensitive cartilage of your ear.
Sure, the payoff is a lovely and tasteful tattoo that even your mom would approve of — but, ironically enough, this dainty tat necessitates having some major balls.
Think about it: getting your cartilage pierced is one of the most painful possible piercing experiences. Which makes sense, since you’re shoving a needle through a much thicker layer than if you were just getting, say, your earlobe pierced.
So, it only stands to reason that having your cartilage tattooed would be an equally (if not more) excruciating process.
But … the tattoos are admittedly really cute.
So, as long as you can accept that the process is likely to be an extremely painful alternative to a piercing, it may very well be worth the pain and effort.
But remember: you could always just get a helix cuff earring, which essentially captures a similar effect without any piercings or tattoo needles.
But hey, it’s your ear and your recovery time — so you do you, girl.
As for me? I’m going to admire these cute pieces of ink from a comfortably safe distance.
