Little William, whom Kimmel named after his close TV partner Guillermo, underwent open heart surgery only days after being born. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, but we can’t possibly imagine anything more terrifying for a new parent to endure.
Last night, Jimmy Kimmel tearfully shared that his newborn son, William “Billy” Kimmel, had open heart surgery.
The late night talkshow host and his wife Molly McNearney excitedly welcomed their second kiddo into the world on April 21st. However, doctors soon informed the couple that their little Billy, at only 3 days old, would require open heart surgery. I honestly can’t imagine anything more terrifying for a parent to hear.
“We call him Billy, six pushes he was out, he appeared a normal healthy baby,” Kimmel began in the opening of Monday night’s show while fighting back tears.
After Billy was born, Kimmel and his wife were moved to a recovery room where their first child, Jane, was anxiously waiting to meet her new baby brother.
Only three hours later, as the family embraced their newest addition, a very attentive nurse noticed something was wrong with Billy.
“My wife was in bed relaxing, a very attentive nurse at Cedars-Sinai heard a murmur in his heart and noticed he was a bit purple, which is not common,” Kimmel explained. “Nurses determined he wasn’t getting enough oxygen in his blood, either in his heart or lungs … It’s a terrifying thing, you know my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what’s going on.”
Billy’s heart surgeon sat down with Kimmel and his wife to explain that their son was born with a congenital heart disease and that there was a “hole in the wall of the left and right side of his heart.”
The following Monday morning, Billy had a successful open heart surgery.
“He’ll have to have another surgery in 3-6 months,” Kimmel said and noted that Billy will need a third “non-evasive surgery when he’s older.”
In typical Kimmel fashion, the host tried to make light of such an emotional experience, “Poor kid, not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face,” Kimmel joked.
Well, that may be the cutest face I’ve ever seen.
Six days after he was born, little Billy was finally able to leave the hospital and go home with his family.
Kimmel made sure to thank all of his friends that stood by his family’s side during such a terrifying event, even Matt Damon.
“Every one of my friends was there 100%. We had atheists praying for us, okay? We had people who do not believe in God praying to him. And I hate to even say, but even that son-of-a-bitch Matt Damon sent flowers.”
Of course, he saved his most tearful words of gratitude for his wife Molly who was unbelievably brave throughout the entire ordeal.
“Most of all, I want to thank my wife Molly. First of all, for allowing me to have sex with her in the first place.,” he joked. “But also for being so strong and level-headed and positive and loving during the worst nightmare a new mother could experience. I couldn’t as for a better partner and I’m so happy we had this baby together. I’m definitely getting a vasectomy after this.”
Molly also shared this sweet photo of her “two brave guys” today.
Oh my goodness.
Kimmel expressed his thanks on Twitter and asked that any donations please go to the children’s hospital.
“I saw a lot of families there…and no parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child’s life,” Kimmel said through tears.
According to TIME, Kimmel is on a much needed paternity leave this week and his famous friends will guest host the ABC show in his absence.
Our thoughts go out to you and your family, Kimmel ❤️
