Something old, new, borrowed, and blue is supposed to bring the bride good luck on her day. While this century-old tradition is still holding strong, common rituals are being replaced with movie-themed weddings, funny cake toppers and colorful bridal dresses. But not for one particular bride, Ali Ferrell, who included her 92-year-old uncle instead.
Ali’s uncle, Bill Elben, a US Marine Corps sergeant during World War II, fell victim to pneumonia. This sickness is never ideal especially with older age and he wasn’t sure if he could make his niece’s wedding.
When the nurses asked Bill what his goal was, he responded, “‘I want to be something blue in your wedding.'” And if that’s not the sweetest motivation, I don’t know what is.
“‘When we first got engaged, I knew that I wanted to include Uncle Bill in a special way,” Ali told KFVS 12.
After serious recovery during his extended stay in rehabilitation Bill was able to make his goal come true.
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the church when he was escorted down the aisle in his dress blues,” Ali wrote on Facebook. “It was such an honor to have him serve as my “Something Blue” on my wedding day and a memory that will last a lifetime.”
I’m not crying, you’re crying…
