There’s a decent chance that you’ve encountered a Lush Cosmetics store in your lifetime — you’d know it, because you can usually smell the irresistible (albeit overwhelming) fragrance wafting down the street. The company specializes in fresh, handmade bath and body products, with a focus on natural ingredients and a refusal to give in to animal testing.
During college, I worked as a sales associate at Lush Cosmetics. During my three years with the company, I learned more about natural beauty products, haircare and skincare than I ever imagined possible. And, since Lush products have only been increasing in popularity, I figured, why should my expertise go to waste?
So, in my humble opinion, here are the top Lush products that are most worth your while — and should definitely not fly under your radar.
I know, I know: only one bath product? While I will concede that the glittery, brightly-colored bath products littering the tables of any given Lush store make for magical displays, they are also somewhat tedious to use — i.e., your bathtub will more than likely end up stained or covered in glitter. (Unless you use some of the more low-key bath bombs like Avobath or Blackberry.) That’s why I tend to prefer the bubble bars over the bath bombs: they still smell great, give you load of bubbles, and generally don’t leave you with a giant mess to clean up. The Rose Jam fragrance is also undeniably magnificent, and leaves your skin smelling like roses and honey.
Many of the solid soaps don’t provide much benefit beyond their fragrance alone — except for this bad boy. Sandstone, as the name implies, is filled with granules of sand, and provides some truly stellar exfoliation. While you probably won’t want to use this over your entire body (it’s a tad harsh), it does an excellent job of sloughing away especially dry or uneven skin while leaving behind a healthy glow and citrusy fragrance.
The scent of this shower gel is a wonderfully appealing blend of mandarin and orange flower that’s just subtle enough to appeal to pretty much everybody. Best of all, the gel comes with a thin layer of olive oil in the bottle (which you should shake before using), and it’s incredibly moisturizing.
A tad predictable, but come on — it’s a Lush bestseller for a reason. This is basically a margarita for your face and body (which I mean in the best possible way). Ocean Salt is made with fine and coarse sea salt, and is perfect for exfoliating the body regularly, and exfoliating the face on a semi-weekly basis. The scrub is also filled with lime-infused vodka, which makes it incredibly brightening. (And no, as I have told customers repeatedly, it will not get you drunk.) Use it when you need some reinvigoration or your skin is feeling dull.
Most conditioners are filled with silicones, which slick down the shaft of your hair follicle and provide the illusion of moisture — without actually providing much moisture. American Cream provides plenty of silicone-free moisture while simultaneously perfuming your hair with the irresistible fragrance of strawberry and vanilla. Just try not to giggle too much about the name.
Every time I’ve shown this shampoo to a customer, they’ve looked at me like I was nuts. Which, I suppose, is fair — it sort of looks like a pile of porridge, and it’s hard to believe that it lathers at all. However, I promise it does! This volumizing shampoo is full of coarse sea salt, which effectively exfoliates the scalp and gives you the best hair day you’ve ever had. Plus, it makes leaves your locks feeling super soft and shiny.
The most remarkable feature of this hair product is that one pot could easily last you for six months. The hair moisturizer is packed with super rich ingredients, such as avocado butter, cupuacu butter, and jojoba oil. Applying a dab of this cream to your hair (wet or dry) will give you glossy ends and protect against dryness and frizz. Plus, the smell will have everyone asking you what perfume you’re wearing.
Soap-based facial cleansers often make your skin feel tight and dry. If you’re looking for a soft and clean feeling, and looking to retain your skin’s natural moisture, then Lush’s clay-based cleansers are absolutely dreamy. Angels On Bare Skin is an exfoliating facial cleaner, filled with ground almonds to scrub away dead skin and lavender to balance the sebum production in your skin — and the kaolin clay helps to clean out your pores without sapping your skin of too much moisture. As the name implies, it’s truly angelic.
An oil-based, soap-free cleanser that rids your skin of excess oil and removes even waterproof mascara? Yeah, you definitely want this cream cleanser in your beauty arsenal, particularly if you have very sensitive skin. You’ll never go back to another nighttime face wash ever again.
Not-so-fun fact: quite a few moisturizers are mostly comprised of water, which means that you have to use more of the products to actually feel any hydration. Thankfully, Lush facial moisturizers are moistly comprised of essential oils and infusions, so you only need a small dab to properly hydrate your entire face. Although the Vanishing Cream moisturizer might not be perfect for all skin types (particularly people with very dry skin), it is truly one of the most effective moisturizers I’ve ever used — even taking luxury brands into account. The cream offers hydration, but also mattifies the skin while simultaneously healing blemishes. If most moisturizers make your skin feel oily within half an hour, then this product will change your damn life.
The term “body conditioner” might be perplexing, but it’s really exactly what it sounds like: you use this miraculous product in the shower, after you’ve cleansed your body with a soap or shower gel. Apply the conditioner to your skin, leave it for a few minutes, then wash it away. Thanks to the Argan oil featured in the product, your skin is left feeling hydrated (but not oily) and supple. Plus, the conditioner has the same intoxicating honey-rose fragrance as the Rose Jam bubbleroon. You’ll smell — and feel — good enough to eat.
The balm only contains three ingredients: jojoba oil, candelilla wax, and rose wax. Though the component list is short, this product is a wunderkind. It’s basically an all-natural replacement for petroleum jelly, and can be used to hydrate lips, heal tattoos, moisturize elbows — it’s basically a moisturizing jack-of-all-trades. Definitely carry a pot in your purse with you. (But don’t leave it in the car or it’ll melt!)
Again — kind of a no-brainer to include in this list. This body lotion is heavenly for all skin types, but is especially fabulous for people whose skin is easily irritated by fragrances or harsh ingredients. Dream Cream is made with oat milk, lavender and rose water, and is a wonderful soother for the skin. Plus, the faint smell is utterly relaxing before bedtime.
I never though I would heartily recommend a cuticle cream, but here we are. This thick butter not only mends dry cuticles (as promised), it is also an excellent addition to hand an foot treatments. Simply slather your hands or feet in Lemony Flutter, use some moistened Ocean Salt scrub to exfoliate them, and wash away the mixture in warm water. Your hands and feet will be left feeling ridiculously soft and smooth.
This product, though it may sound unnecessary, is kind of brilliant. A dusting of this powder over your skin will mattify your body lotion, while simultaneously sapping away unwanted moisture (*ahem* sweat). It will also leave your skin with the faint and sexy scent of jasmine. Don’t kid yourself: this product is the only way to gracefully avoid swamp-ass during the summer.
