Recently, Jay-Z released his revelatory album, 4:44, and the world was served up with some harsh truths when the rapper used multiple tracks to corroborate Beyoncé’s allegations about him cheating. Even though many of us ultimately knew that Lemonade wasn’t a farce by any means, perhaps we just wanted to believe that the accusations of adultery were simply being used to drum up record sales, and that this celebrity relationship was still unmarred.
In a video “footnote” on Tidal, however, Jay-Z opened up about how and why his marriage to Beyoncé started to “crack.”
The footnote also features the likes of Mahershala Ali, Aziz Ansari, Will Smith and Chris Rock, who discuss their own relationships with women and their families.
Jay-Z, for his part, admits that his relationship with Beyoncé wasn’t really built on the truth, which led to a shaky foundation.
“This is my real life,” the rapper states in the video. “I just ran into this place and we built this big, beautiful mansion of a relationship that wasn’t totally built on the 100 percent truth, and it starts cracking. Things start happening that the public can see. Then we had to get to a point of, ‘OK, let’s tear this down and then start from the beginning.'”
And tearing down a marriage and starting over certainly isn’t easy. “Remember we just talked about me: I’m from Marcy Projects,” he says. “I’ve been shot at. But nothing is harder than this. I’m telling you, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
“Most humans, us, you know what I mean? We’re not willing to put ourselves through that. Most people just give up.”
Ultimately, Jay-Z implies that the couple needed to be totally honest with themselves (and their fans) in order to move forward.
“We just got to a place where, in order for this to work, this can’t be fake. Not one ounce. I’m not saying it wasn’t uncomfortable because obviously it was.”
Hopefully, this video confession indicates that the couple has been somewhat successful in their efforts to revitalize and rebuild their union. At the very least, perhaps it’s a nod to the public that the rumors were indeed correct, and we all just need to move on now.
