In an effort to keep up with the advent of new technology and constantly shifting social trends, Dictionary.com has added over 300 words to its database so far this year. These additions include a wide variety of slang terms such as “dabbing” and “slay” (yes, really). Not to mention, several hipster-inspired phrases like “man bun”.
These are just a few of our favorites from the 2017 list. You may even want to share them with your parents to help them stay “hip with the cool kids.” What a time to be alive, amirite?
(verb) the act of performing a dance move that involves posing with one’s nose in the crook of a bent elbow at chest level while extending the other arm to the side at or above shoulder level, often as a celebratory posture in sports or other competitions.
After their touchdown, the whole team dabbed.
(verb) to strongly impress or overwhelm someone.
Her whole album slays.
3. Struggle Bus:
(noun) a situation, task, etc., that seems difficult or frustrating.
With no sleep last night, I’ll be on the struggle bus today.
4. Throw Shade:
(verb) to insult, criticize, or disrespect a person or thing in an indirect, artful manner.
He threw some shade at his former boss.
(noun) Also called resting bitchface, bitchy resting face, chronic bitchface. (especially of a woman) a facial expression that does not consciously express a particular emotion but that others perceive as scowling, threatening, etc.
I’m not angry, I just have chronic bitch face.
6. Man Bun:
(noun) a man’s hair gathered into a bun at the back or top of the head.
Guys with man buns are so hipster.
7. Dad Bod:
(noun) a man’s physique that is slightly overweight or flabby but still attractive.
He is totally rocking that dad bod.
(adj) feeling irritable or irrationally angry as a result of being hungry.
She’s hangry because she skipped lunch today.
(verb) to send someone a sexually explicit digital image, video, text message, or email, typically a photo of oneself, usually by cell phone.
Since they’re dating long distance, they usually resort to sexting.
10. Mic Drop:
(noun) the act of intentionally dropping one’s microphone at the end of a speech or performance, displaying a bold confidence that it has been very impressive or cannot be topped.
He ruffled some feathers with his acceptance speech and mic drop after winning the Oscar.
(noun) the yearly recurrence of the date that two or more people first became friends.

12. Cat Café:
(noun) a business establishment that has numerous cats available for customers to play with, and usually offers food and drinks.
Can we please go to the cat café to pet kittens and drink coffee?
(noun) the twentieth day of the fourth month, or the time 4:20, when referenced as a day or time for cannabis consumption or the celebration of marijuana culture.
