Cosplaying, or the act of wearing costume or fashion accessories to embody a specific character, may seem like a pastime aimed specifically at young people — but one creative lady has successfully proven that notion to be 100% false.
Solange, from Manaus, Brazil, is a mom and cosplayer who goes by the name “Aunty Sol” on Facebook.
Thanks to Aunty Sol’s imaginative and fun cosplaying ideas, she’s become something of an online sensation.
Aunty Sol says that her cosplaying actually began when she accepted a bet from one of her friends.
“A friend said that I wouldn’t have the guts,” she tells BuzzFeed. “I chose a character and had the costume made without saying another word. It was Tweety Bird’s granny. When it was ready, I took a photo, and posted it on my Facebook.”
Since then, Aunty Sol has become a cosplay favorite, and has embodied a wide array of beloved characters — though she says her online popularity came as a bit of a surprise.
“I never thought that I would be well received among the young people, I’ve made a lot of friends during all of this,” she tells BuzzFeed.
Of the characters she’s embodied, her favorites have been Muriel from Courage the Cowardly Dog and Yubaba from Spirited Away.
She’s also dressed up as Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers, Tala from Moana, and Ursula from The Little Mermaid.
Overall, Aunty Sol says that she loves cosplaying because it allows her to be imaginative and not take things too seriously. Her best life advice?
“Love, have fun and enjoy life because we don’t know when we’ll be leaving it behind. When the time comes, I can tell you that I’ve done everything that I’ve wanted to.”
