There are limitless benefits to getting in shape—boosted mood, reduced anxiety, healthy body, and so on. However, we know that actually making yourself go to the gym isn’t always the easiest task. Some days, Netflix just sounds so much more inviting than sweating your ass off at the squat rack.
We’ve all been there, but it’s important that you have at least a few go-to methods of motivating yourself to workout. Lord knows, you’ll be glad that you did.
1. Pick out some cute workout clothes.
Much like a new dress or top can boost your mood at work, cute workout clothes are a great way to motivate yourself for the gym. I mean, where else are you going to show off those stylish leggings?
2. Leave yourself motivational messages around the house.
It might sound silly, but leaving yourself a few inspiring sticky notes around the house can give you that extra kick in the butt you need to get moving. I currently have several on my mirror that read “no excuses” or “do it for the booty”.
3. Create a a gym-spiration playlist and start listening to it while you get ready.
This one’s a biggie. Most people have a go-to playlist for their workouts, but think about making a separate one that’s specifically meant to boost you up on those sluggish days. Turn it on while you get ready and before you know it, the gym will seem like the best idea you’ve ever had.
4. Remind yourself how good you’ll feel afterwards.
No one has ever regretted a workout. You never get through working your ass off and think ‘damn I really wish I hadn’t done that’. After an intense gym session, life always seems a little bit easier—thanks to that nice endorphin boost.
5. Find a workout buddy who will hold you accountable.
Accountability is huge when you’re trying to get back in shape. Having someone to push you when you’re being lazy and motivate you to keep going is the best way to ensure you’ll stick with it.
6. Think about how amazing that post-workout meal will taste.
Personally, I have no bigger motivator than food. I’m constantly thinking to myself ‘if I just get through this workout, I can chow down on a burger and fries like nobody’s business’.
7. Track your progress on a Fitbit or in your phone.
Though it’s definitely not necessary to have a fancy gadget, keeping track of how far you’ve come and how far you want to go, can do wonders for your fitness journey.
8. Remind yourself that even a short workout is better than nothing.
A busy schedule is NO excuse to skip the gym. Even 20 minutes here and there is better than nothing. Again, you’ll only regret the workout you don’t do.
9. Imagine your crush is watching you.
Sometimes, on my least gym-inclined days, I like to think about my crush and how impressed he’d be by my gym hustle. Work it girl.
10. Think about that bubble butt you’ve been wanting.
A very wise person once said, “you won’t get the ass you want by sitting on it” and truer words have never been spoken.
11. Plan to reward yourself afterwards.
Finally, if you’ve had an especially rough week, plan to treat yo’ self after your workout. Whether that means a spontaneous shopping trip or a bottle of your favorite wine, do something for YOU.
