Lorde’s Video Music Awards performance included an artistic piece that wasn’t exactly what spectators were expecting. One would only assume that a pop star singer next in line to perform would in fact use his/her voice (or at least pull a Britney Spears and lip sync), once hitting the stage. However, Lorde’s routine was glaringly missing one important thing: her vocal cords.
Instead of singing, Lorde’s entire skit was an interpretive dance number, leaving a majority of the MTV audience a bit dumbfounded.
People took to Twitter to share their confusion:
But unless you saw Lorde’s Twitter message beforehand, you were probably caught off guard, too.
The original plan was thrown out the window once Lorde came down with the flu. But instead of canceling her lineup, she improvised and danced like no one was watching. And hey, props to getting an IV and still showing up to be lifted in the air and crawl across the stage. I don’t care who you are, that takes some serious courage.
Here’s Lorde’s full performance for those of you who missed the artistic spectacle.
So if there’s one thing we’ve learned after 34 VMAs, it’s always expect the unexpected. Because whether it’s a part of the plan (like Christina Aguilera, Madonna and Britney Spears making out) or a last minute switch like Lorde’s performance, this awards show never fails to keep people on their toes.
