Okay, let’s be frank: considering the amount of buildup and anticipation the song received leading up to its release, Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” is a letdown at best. Even if it’s not a classically “bad” song (no one is singing off-key and it was obviously professionally produced), it’s not particularly catchy, the lyrics aren’t especially poetic or remarkable, and, most importantly: you can’t really dance or sing along to the “hook.”
Perhaps I should be applauding Taylor ‘s attempt to buck the typical pop song expectations, and I respect the unconventional pacing of the song. But, I’m also not about to spend money on it.
However, “Look What You Made Me Do” just got a significant upgrade, courtesy of (who else?) Britney Spears, which has me rethinking my initial stance on the song.
YouTuber AnDy Wu recently mashed up “Look What You Made Me Do” with Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” and the results are a surprising improvement on Taylor’s original single.
I mean, is it really any wonder that the addition of Britney’s own hit has the ability to make any other song better? Is there anything she can’t do?
Thankfully, this mashup provides us with the one thing we needed from “Look What You Made Me Do”: a beat we can actually move to.
