12 products that will make your kid’s bedtime *mostly* a breeze

Remember sleep before kids? Did we ever really appreciate waking up and going to bed at a time that we personally felt was best for us? Of course not. Like most things, we don’t truly know what we’ve got til it’s gone. In this case, the thing that reminds us of how lucky we used to be is a tiny little alarm clock that strangely resembles you, constantly needs water/another story/to use the bathroom, and will not be ignored.

While there’s no one item that is guaranteed to get your child to conk out, one or a combination of these things may at least help ease your little one into his or her sleep routine.

1. A white noise machine

I personally have two of the Marpac Dohm sound machines and could not imagine going to sleep without it. The Dohm has 2 speed settings that provide the soothing, whirring sounds of a fan, and you can adjust each level to allow more or less sound. Noise machines are great because they condition you to sleep, and of course it will also drown out the sounds of Netflix in your living room.

2. A cool mist humidifier

We’re all running AC in the summers, and the heater in the winters, and both make the air especially dry. A cool mist humidifier puts moisture back into the room, allowing you to breath easier at night. This one has an optional nightlight for older kids, and doesn’t require filter replacements – just clean it weekly with the brush it comes with.

When your kid’s ability to distinguish between day and night is established, but they just can’t seem to stay asleep past the crack of dawn, consider getting some blackout curtains. In the long days of summer you’ll be happy you tricked them into thinking it’s darker out than it actually is.

Aveeno’s combination of lavender and vanilla calms and comforts fussy kiddos, and the scent will help condition your baby to know that it’s time to wind down for bed. Try a baby massage after bath time, which is wonderful for bonding and giving your child some skin-to-skin contact. Research suggests that massage is a great tool to help prevent colic, promote better sleep, and enhances baby’s immune system and overall development.

8. The original Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

I don’t know what kind of science (more like straight up witchcraft) was involved in making this book, but it’s incredible. If you don’t already have this book in your nursery, get it. The lulling patterns of words are almost non-sensical, but it doesn’t even matter. If you read it at just the right pace, in a lower than normal register, it’s like being wrapped in a warm hug.

9. The sleep sack swaddler

tk products that will make your kids bedtime mostly a breeze 21 12 products that will make your kids bedtime *mostly* a breeze

Honestly I wish we would have done the sleep sack thing the second we got home from the hospital. We fussed with perfecting our swaddling technique for too many months, and it was a miracle if baby didn’t wake up in the process. Do yourself a favor: skip the ones with the loud-ass velcro and head straight for the sacks with a much quieter and easy-to-use zipper. The startle reflex is no match for this thing.

Bottom line: cotton PJ’s help your kid regulate their temperature at night. And if your kiddo is still in onesies, again I declare: ZIPPERS! Who the hell wants to fuss with 800 tiny buttons on a cranky, squirmy kid? Burt’s Bee’s uses 100% certified organic cotton, and you can get gowns, sleepers, and pj sets.

11. The Vanilla-scented Soothie Pacifier

tk products that will make your kids bedtime mostly a breeze 22 12 products that will make your kids bedtime *mostly* a breeze

These puppies are “Hospital-grade, BPA-free and latex-free silicone for strength, comfort and durability.” The calming vanilla scent is tasteless, but soothing to babies. Plus, going to bed wit a pacifier has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. But, these are not to be confused with the Wubbanub Soothies which, while cute, could become a potential suffocation hazard due to the attached plush toy. The plain ol’ silicone Soothie will do the trick, and if your kiddo spits it out in the middle of the night, he can roll over it and probably not even notice.
