15 totally unnecessary baby items parents get tricked into thinking they need

Anyone who’s ever gone into a baby store to register knows the sheer panic that comes with wandering the aisles in a state of terror. What the hell is a sheet protector? How can there possibly be so many bottles?

Registering for baby is a living nightmare, and one that baby product retailers hope you’ll have while they can sell you stuff in the store. Because if there’s anyone more easy to fool, it’s a first time parent who has no clue what they are getting themselves into.

One thing you can be certain of: all babies are different, and all parents can do is try their best and do what works for their situations.

From one parent to another, YOU DO YOU! But, in an effort to save as many people as possible from registry torture, do your research, talk to your friends/family, and opt for things that best suit you.

1. Baby shoes

Unless your kid is actually walking, you can probably skip these. Yes, they look cute in photos, but they serve no actual purpose beyond that. Stick with socks or knit booties until your tike is on the move.

2. Bath thermometer

Your elbow is the only tool you need to tell you whether the water is too warm.

3. A changing table

Changing tables end up taking up valuable space in the nursery. Opt instead for the changing pad, which provides support and helps keep your infant from rolling off the surface. Plus, it can go from room to room with you.

4. Crib bumpers and fancy bedding

Despite how cute they are, bumpers pose a very serious suffocation risk, so it’s best to just forgo these altogether. And since babies should also never sleep with anything in the crib, all you really need is a couple of fitted sheets. A mesh liner is also an option if your kiddo gets their legs and arms through the slats.

5. Baby shampoo

Besides spit up and drool, your baby probably won’t actually get all that dirty. Opt instead for an all-in-one wash to get them clean from head to toe.

6. Complicated baby clothes

Again, they look cute for photos, but if you can’t change their diaper easily (or if they’ll spit up, poop through it, or drool all over it) what’s the point? Simple ‘ol onesies are your BFF.

7. Pacifier wipes

I will admit I have been curious about these, but then I think “I can just wash it in the restroom, or use the backup paci!”

8. A baby food processor

Who has time to make baby food?? Soft solids are easily mixed with a spoon and require less energy that cleaning this thing, which will inevitably just take up space in your kitchen.

9. Special baby detergent

If you just use a free and clear detergent (free of dyes and perfumes) you’re probably covered.

10. Knee pads

LOL, good luck trying to get these on when you need them, and also to stay on.

11. Pee pee teepees

A couple mothers of boys nominated this one, and I’m laughing/crying. I get it, boys have a tendency to spray. But I’ve lost count of how many times my girl has peed the changing pad. Sure, it’s not aimed directly at my face. But either way, you just learn to get really fast at changing diapers … and keep a spare changing pad cover handy.

12. Bathrobes

Depending on how problematic your kid is about bath time (mine is), a regular adult towel is probably good enough. Plus, you want one that’s pretty thick, since babies easily get cold coming right out of the bathtub. If you must get some especially for baby, the thicker the better.

13. Wipe warmer

Again, torn on this one because the middle-of-the-night changes were much more soothing with warm vs cold wipes. But another office mom suggested that this item is one that can be skipped. The warm environment inside the container is a breeding ground for bacteria, and the wipes do have a tendency to dry out. Plus, it can condition your baby to be picky about diaper changing conditions –if you’ve ever had to change a diaper in the back of your car, you know those aren’t always ideal.

14. High chair

As we approach this new milestone in our kid’s life, research I’ve conducted into which one to go with has ultimately led me to believe it’s actually totally unnecessary. This is mostly due to their bulk, and the issue of storage between kids. Plus they are cleaning nightmares. I think I’ll opt instead for a booster seat.

15. Baby scale

The only use I could imagine this having would be if you have to closely monitor baby’s weight loss or gain – in which case you’d probably be making very regular visits to the pediatrician. Otherwise, you get your baby’s stats at their weekly, then bi-monthly wellness checkups. Between then, I’ve weighed myself holding my kid on a normal scale, then weighed myself and subtracted. It’s not an exact science, but it’s close enough.
