Paris Fashion Week was always bound to deliver some truly jaw-dropping stylistic trends, but this new haute couture shoe may be taking things one step too far — no pun intended.
And trust me, I hate that I was forced to make that joke.
Over the weekend, Balenciaga revealed the most divisive trend from their upcoming Spring collection: platform Crocs, adorned with charms. Because, you know, Crocs alone weren’t unsightly enough — they needed to be elevated.
Though the Croc is certainly lightweight enough to make for a surprisingly comfortable platform shoe, the style is also unmistakably evocative of how your mom looks when going outside to tend her plants. I suppose that makes this look “groundbreaking” — but I’m also not sure that’s a good thing.
“Working with Balenciaga has been so much fun for our team, and once again demonstrates the relevance of our iconic clog in today’s fashion and design world, as well as allowing us to tap into the excitement and energy that comes from unexpected partnerships,” Crocs SVP Michelle Poole told Footwear News in an interview.
So, you know. At least Crocs is stoked about this footwear abomination.
Perhaps this is the moment when comfortable footwear and designer fashion are finally merging to create trendy shoes I can tolerate wearing for longer than twenty minutes. In which case, I suppose I should be grateful.
I just really wish the result didn’t look like giant toddler shoes.
