If there’s one time of year where getting scared is considered fun, it’s Halloween. While movies, books, and TV shows delve into the spooky and sometimes pararnormal, it’s usually the truth that’s stranger that fiction.
Check out these weird occurrences that will have you questioning what you know. Just don’t read these in the dark…
1. Parental discretion
Growing up, my bedroom was the only one that faced the front of the house/street. When I was about 8 or 9, I woke up to my dad calmly but firmly telling me to get up, go in the bathroom, and shut the door. I was annoyed because I was half asleep, but I listened. Apparently I was more tired than I realized, because I feel asleep on the bathroom floor. The next morning I asked my mom what happened. She seemed oblivious and confused. I looked at my dad like she was crazy, and I asked him why he had woken me up. He denied doing it. I was becoming frustrated to the point of tears, but I ultimately let it go.
Fast forward to college. I was home one break, and I decided to ask again. I had thought of that night off and on for years, and it still bothered me. This time, my dad goes, “Ha! I was wondering if you even remembered that.” Turns out that a lot of houses on our block were being vandalized and robbed all those years ago. Someone had broken into the garage and was inside the house. My room was partially over the garage. My dad heard it happen and quietly got me to safety. Police were called, the guy ran. He was never caught, however, and my parents didn’t want a terrified kid on their hands, so for years they pretended like nothing had ever happened. It wasn’t supernatural, but it was unsettling for sure. – Call_Me_Egg via Reddit
2. Paranormal redecorator
I was sitting in our office room home alone when I was 19. I was typing a paper for one of my college classes. The office room used to be my sisters room before she moved out, so a lot of her decorations are still there.
She had a photo of a mountain range, an oval shaped mirror, and three different hangings that read “faith”, “hope”, and “love”. This makes 5 total things hanging on the wall in the room.
Suddenly, I got random chills. Which happens all the time it was pretty cold. But this time, as soon as I got the chills, everything in the room hanging on the walls fell off simultaneously. This really freaked me out, but it got a tiny bit worse. I got up and walked out of the room only to notice EVERYTHING hanging on a wall in my house had fell (besides the television in my room). All the pictures in the living room and other rooms, all the trophies in my room from little league sports, and even a stand that held candles.
I wasn’t sure what to do. I picked up all the stuff and hung it back up, which actually took me around 15-20 minutes. Then I drove to campus to finish my paper. Never told my parents.
It’s also worth mentioning this happened around noon on a sunny day three winters ago – Mac2663 via Reddit
3. Stay off the third floor
On my previous job when our building was still under construction, the only floors that were occupied were the 1st,2nd,5th,6th and 7th. One time I was alone inside the elevator going from 1st to the 6th floor when suddenly it stopped and opened on the 3rd floor. Normally I would just disregard it but rumors where all over that a ghost child was playing around on the vacant floors. So I pressed the closed button as I fast as I could. When it closed I heard noises like someone was tapping their fingers on the walls of elevator. – sizzlorr26 via Reddit
4. Wrong number
When I was around 20, a few years ago, I kept having dreams about a woman with long black hair named Aurora (pronounced A-roar-uh). They were different dreams but for some reason, her distinct face and name always ended up in them. It got to the point where I would wake up frustrated and confused, trying to google her name or find out how I was connected to her. After a few months she stopped showing up and I dismissed it, thinking my brain was just being a ‘scumbag.’
Fast forward a few years later, Halloween 2009, I’m in the car with a friend stopped at a gas station. I’m about to pull out and merge onto a highway when I get a phone call from a random number, so I stop the car but no one answered.
There was a person behind me who grew impatient, honked at me, and then swerved in front of me instead of waiting for 2 seconds for me to move. Second they get on the highway, a silver Civic loses control of their wheel and crashes into the car that swerved in front of me. I called the cops and waited at the gas station for them to come. Turns out the drivers of both cars died. It 100% would have been me if I hadn’t got that phone call. Called it back a few hours later out of gratitude and curiosity, rang 3 times and went to voicemail. “Hi, you’ve reached Aurora, please leave your name and number.” Never had goosebumps like that in my life.
Called it again the next day, because I was that confused about the whole situation. Some woman answers, we get to talking, I tell her my entire story including the dreams I had. She tells me she doesn’t know how I got her number and that she never called me as far as she remembers. Weird. Ask her if she has a facebook to confirm if she is in fact the woman in my dreams.
Check her facebook, holy f**k, it’s her. – Sarax11 via Reddit
5. The masseuse
My friend died in a car accident and they towed the car pretty early in the day. We were teens so we thought we should go collect all her things that were ejected from the car when she hit the tree.
After about a half hour, I was overwhelmed and just sat down and started crying. I had my two friends with me cleaning stuff up, and they just let me get it out for a bit.
Someone started rubbing my shoulders in the deepest massage I have ever had, and it was really helping me get control of myself and relaxing me. I let them rub for a few minutes and then I put my hand on theirs to let them know I was appreciative.
There was no hand, just my shoulder. I turned around to say thank you to whoever it was, and there was nobody. I looked up at the car and my two friends were standing there talking about something.
SOMETHING had been TOUCHING me!!
I ran to the car and asked my friends if it was them. They looked at me like I was crazy. I made everyone get in the car super fast and we left.
I think a spirit was comforting me in my loss, and I am grateful and freaked out for it. I can still remember how it felt, and it’s been 22 years. – insight_owner via Reddit
6. The school poltergeist
A secondary school in Cork, Ireland reportedly had an unexpected visitor in the middle of the night earlier this month. The eerie footage was captured at Deerpark CBS, the oldest school located near the south side of the city.
Founded all the way back in 1928, suspicious incidents may have been going on for decades. However, bizarre footage was only recently caught on tape thanks to motion-activated cameras.

7. The Skeletor of Hampton Court Palace
It is said that Hampton Court Palace is one of Britain’s most haunted places. Back in 2003, HRP‘s CCTV footage captured what they refer to as “Skeletor:
On three consecutive days, palace security staff were called to close one particular fire door near the palace’s Introductory Exhibition.
On the first day, CCTV footage showed the doors flying wide open with great force but there was nothing to reveal why.
On the second day, the same thing happened but this time a ghostly-looking figure in period dress suddenly appeared on the screen and closed the doors.
Who is this creature? The palace website describes an apparition of Catherine Howard, who was the fifth wife of Henry VIII. That is, until she was beheaded for committing adultery during their marriage. HRP recounts:
It’s said that when Catherine was arrested at Hampton Court Palace, she broke free from the guards and ran to the doors of the Chapel Royal, where she believed Henry was at prayer. She screamed to the King for mercy, to no avail.
Could the ghost on camera be Catherine, searching for her husband to make things right?
8. The man with the missing a face
One time when I was in middle school I fell asleep on the couch in our living room. Around 1 in the morning I woke up and saw a man walk through the wall adjoining our living room to my brother’s bedroom. The man noticed me and turned to face me. He had half of his face missing as if he had been dragged along the highway. He put his finger to his lips as if to tell me not to tell anyone and then turned forward and walked through our glass door out into the yard. Obviously freaked out I ran into my brother’s room to find an empty bed. I run screaming and crying to my parents and they freak out and start calling all my brothers friends’ houses trying to find him. When they finally got in touch with him they found out he had been at a college party drinking about an hour away. My dad went to pick my brother and his best friend up not wanting them to drive home drunk. The next day we found out that the kid who was originally going to drive my brother home was killed when he was ejected from his car during a drunk driving accident. – emmiebe18 via Reddit
9. The moving scribbles
I was living in a house in Laguna Beach that had been there since the 1920s. In its history, it had been a speakeasy, a brothel and a house for smuggling illegal immigrants.
One day, my new wife and I were having an argument. I can’t even recall what it was about. She walked down the block to get a cup of coffee and cool off, and I was alone in the house. From my bedroom, I could look across the hall into the bathroom, then through the bathroom and down the other hall. I was standing at my dresser, and I just noticed movement out the corner of my eye, and looked down there.
There was… and honest to god, this gives me goosebumps just typing it, 17 years later, a black figure. It was maybe three feet tall, and it was only vaguely humanoid. It looked like black scribbles, like someone had scribbled a human shape, but the scribbles moved, like electricity arcing, that’s the best way to describe it. There was no sound that I could remember. I distinctly remember when I saw it I wasn’t afraid, just like, WTF? Then it noticed me looking at it. I can’t say it turned around, it just focused on me I guess. THEN I was scared. I didn’t move, didn’t scream, nothing; I was just frozen, because it just f**king came at me, it RUSHED down the hall towards me.
I have no idea what it intended, but as soon as it entered the bathroom, the door closest to me just SLAMMED shut on it. Then I screamed. I yelled for my wife. She wasn’t home. I went outside, into the daylight, and didn’t go back in until she got home about 10 minutes later. – makeskidskill via Reddit.
