Step aside pimple poppers, the new gross internet video of choice is ingrown toenail removal

If there’s one thing we know about the internet, it’s that the next big thing is just around the corner. Take, for example, the evolution of the eyebrow. First, there was the harmless Rainbow Brow, followed by feathered, barbed wire, and Dragon styles. Then, people had to one-up those with a bunch of others that I’ll spare you from.

In a similar vein, someone saw how massively popular Dr. Pimple Popper‘s whitehead popping, blackhead irrigating, and cyst operating videos were and thought “I bet people would watch me remove my ingrown toenail.” And you know what, he’s wasn’t wrong.

For the sake of understanding exactly what an ingrown toenail is, and how someone takes it upon them self to rid the hellacious malady, let’s start with some medical info. An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail grows into the soft flesh that surrounds the nail bed, usually as a result of too-tight shoes or damage done to the nail in some way. Ingrown nails are typically painful, and can include swelling, redness, and sometimes pus at the location of the ingrown.

There are a couple of different ways to treat an ingrown toenail. According to the Mayo Clinic‘s website, this is done by either (a) lifting the nail with cotton or floss to encourage growth away from the flesh; (b) a doctor partially removing the nail; and/or (c) a doctor removing the nail and tissue to prevent the nail from growing back.

If you’ve got just the right amount of curiosity as to how someone can undergo this gross and painful experience, the IngrownLife YouTube account has been documenting their personal journey of removing and repairing the damage done by an ingrown nail.

And here’s the incredibly satisfying removal of a giant chunk of nail from under the skin.

Here, the poster looks to have used the method in which you apply a bit of cotton ball under the nail to get it to grow up away from the skin.

Whether you choose to DIY it, or seek medical help, know that it’s super important to safely and properly remedy ingrown nails, as they can lead to more serious infections.
