Unfortunately for my sanity, 2017 was the year of baffling eyebrow trends.
I’m not sure who decided that this was going to be the case, but somehow, this year proved to be absolutely bonkers when it came to how Instagram makeup artists chose to showcase their brows. From “Lightning Brows,” to “Dragon Brows,” our feeds endured some pretty bizarre facial artwork over the past 365 days.
If you feel like taking a stroll down memory lane, here are some of the brow design highlights (or lowlights, depending on how you look at it) from the past year.
Here’s hoping 2018 will be slightly less infuriating.
This trend highlighted jagged brows which are shaped roughly like lightning bolts. While it seems slightly dramatic for my taste, I’m sure it came in handy around Halloween. However, I will admit that these never really took hold as a street style. In a way, this brow trend was completely aptly named: it came and went in a flash.
The most frustrating aspect of this particular brow trend is that most of the selfies featuring said “Braided Brows” are usually completely Photoshopped — so, not only are these brows a totally preposterous trend, it also seems as though they’re also completely unachievable. Complete malarky, I say!
Much like its mythological namesake, this Instagram brow trend was a truly fearsome beast. Though it didn’t quite take a sword in the gut for the trend to die out, it does feel like we all came dangerously close to walking around with spiky eyebrows for the remainder of the year.
I would almost prefer it if you just cut to the chase and glued two feathers to your face, to be honest. Though this trend was initially started as a joke, it didn’t take long for Instagram makeup artists to glom onto it. (Much to my personal chagrin.)
Elevating the “Feather Brow” shape to the umpteenth level, this brow trend took on a decidedly holiday spin. While there’s something delightfully whimsical about this look, I’m also picturing the reality of peeling stickers from your eyebrows — and it ain’t pretty.
Is it an actual “brow trend” if no brows are involved? I’m not sure, but this look emphasized the illusion of bald brows, and was reminiscent of some bizarre, alien beauty trend.
Probably the initial brow trend of 2017 that kickstarted all of the subsequent silly ones, “Barbed Wire Brows” were almost fashionable — except for the fact that they made it look like you’d just crawled out of bed after a frenzied nightmare. Although I’m sure they do a great job of keeping wayward cows away from your eyebrows.
