Raise your hand if you’re familiar with the following scenario. You wake up for work (after hitting the snooze button no less than 5 times) and barely have enough time to make coffee, let alone eat breakfast. You’re trying to pick out an outfit but literally nothing looks right, and of course your cat chooses that morning to throw up in your hallway, and you definitely will sneeze immediately after applying mascara. It’s no wonder you arrive at work grumpy and irritated – your entire ~vibe~ has been ruined and you’ve barely been awake for more than a hot minute.
Luckily, mornings don’t always have to feel like this. In fact, there are plenty of ways to make your mornings just a little brighter. Workday mornings are never going to be perfect (because, hello, they’re not Saturday mornings), but they don’t have to be mornings from hell either. Here are 7 ways to make your pre-work AM time a little more bearable.
1. Set a fake alarm. Or several.
If you’re someone who can’t resist the lure of the snooze button, you need to start playing tricks on yourself. Set a few faux alarms for at least 30 minutes before you actually really need to wake up. Then you can hit the snooze to your heart’s content without it actually throwing off your morning prep game.
2. Prepare for forgetfulness.
If make-ahead meals aren’t your thing (and don’t worry, they’re not for everyone), at least give yourself a head start by preparing for the things you’re most likely to forget. If you have a tendency to walk out the door without your water bottle, hang it from the key rack in your entryway. If you know you’re going to leave for work without a snack, throw several granola bars in your purse the evening before. Take 30 seconds out of your evening to ask yourself: What am I most likely to forget tomorrow?
3. Give co-washing a try.
Not only is co-washing (aka conditioner only washing) a thing that many people swear by, it’s also a pretty amazing time saver. It’s essentially a win-win that might make your hair look ten times better and can save you a few minutes in the AM.
4. Do yoga…for five minutes.
If there’s no way under any circumstances you’re ever going to be one of those people who gets up at 5am to go to the gym, it’s okay. Seriously, it is OKAY. Early bird workouts are not for everyone. That said, getting some form of exercise even if it’s just for five minutes can work wonders for your body and mind for the rest of the day. YouTube has a vast collection of five-minute yoga routines that won’t eat up too much of your morning but might help you have the best day ever. Definitely worth it.
5. Break out your favorite Spotify playlist.
Your favorite tunes don’t need to be reserved for Friday night as you get ready to go out. Listening to the music that makes you happy might just put you in a good enough mood to navigate the workday without being cranky. It’s hard to be grumpy about Mondays when having a solo dance party in your bathroom.
6. Have a good laugh.
While you drink your morning coffee or tea, browse some of your favorite humor websites. Or look up your favorite comedian on YouTube and watch some of his or her latest videos. And it actually will make you feel better – it’s science. Laughter helps with blood flow, stress, your immune system, and relaxation.
7. Tackle one (small) item on your to-do list.
We know, it’s hard to be productive in the mornings. But even if you do something small, like paying your cell phone bill, or emailing your mom, you’ll feel endlessly accomplished. Consequently, you’ll be in a great mood, and will feel like you can tackle anything else that might come up that day.
