Optical illusions have become an internet favorite, most likely because they engage our brain slightly more than the average piece of celebrity gossip, and depress us less than a typical dose of hard-hitting news. However, they can also quickly become immensely frustrating if you aren’t careful.
One seemingly innocuous Reddit photo has turned into a viral, optical illusion sensation over the weekend — and it’s confusing the ever-loving sh*t out of everyone.
A few days ago, Redditor jr0d7771 posted a photo of a group of girls on a couch to r/Pics entitled “Find the middle girl’s legs.” However, after much deliberation, many people threw up their hands in defeat, unable to find the missing pair of legs. No matter how hard you looked at the mass of jeans, it seemed that no extra legs were to be found.
What is the meaning of such trickery?? Whose legs are whose? And where are the pair of legs which are clearly missing from the group? Is one girl simply poking out of a hole in the couch or something?
I couldn’t make rhyme or reason of this photo for what seemed like ages, and it almost drove me insane.
Upon closer inspection, however, everything becomes much clearer: the girl on the far right is seated slightly in front of all the other girls, and is covering the legs of the girls to her left. To make the visuals even more complicated, they’re both wearing black jeans.
Looks like there isn’t a glitch in the Matrix after all — just some good, old-fashioned black jeans trickery. Which is a relief, because looking at the photo long enough can definitely make you question your entire reality.
However, I have to admit that I’m still partial to one Redditor’s explanation for the whole thing:
