If you think that the societal pressures of physical perfection envelop girls in their teens, you’d better think again. In actuality, this sort of tension starts at a very early age.
Briseyda Ponce, a 17-year-old from Irving, Texas, lives with her cousins in Austin. And occasionally, she has the opportunity to offer some sage advice to her younger relatives — particularly in the realm of body image issues.
Briseyda was about to go for a run one day last week when her 8-year-old cousin, Allysson, asked if she could accompany her. Allysson told Briseyda that she wanted to go on the job becayse some of her classmates, including her crush named Hector, had called her “fat” at school.
Briseyda let Allysson come with her on the run, but made it clear to her cousin that it never pays to worry about what other people think.
“I (explained) to her how beauty isn’t physical, and if she wants to work out or run it has to because she wants to be healthy, not because of others’ opinions about her body,” she told BuzzFeed. “We (laughed) it off.”
In the middle of their jog, Allysson got pretty fatigued.
So, she did what any sensible, exercise-hating person would do: she pulled out a snack. A Rice Krispies Treat, to be exact. (Which, if we’re being honest, is the most baller move ever.)
Briseyda thought the timing was so perfect and hilarious that she felt compelled to share the experience with her Twitter followers.
Naturally, everyone became huge Allysson fans — even though people were totally confused as to why her classmates would call her “fat.”
Briseyda’s followers made it abundantly clear that they supported Allysson and thought she was already perfect.
Also, they made it pretty clear that Hector should just shut the f*ck up from now on, because he is clearly not worthy of Allysson.
Some people were more distracted by Allysson’s curious ability to make a delicious snack appear at a moment’s notice. (Which, to give credit where credit is due, is pretty impressive.)
And don’t worry — Briseyda assured everyone that she spole with Allysson about living a healthy lifestyle, free from the opinions and pressures of others.
“It’s been fun and everyone has been so kind to Allysson,” Briseyda told BuzzFeed. She also said that Allysson is a “smart girl” who didn’t dwell on her crush’s hurtful comments for very long.
“She kind of brushed everything off and forgot about it.”
Major props to Allysson. We should all be blessed with her integrity and emotional fortitude, so as to not waste precious time on people who are unworthy of our fabulousness.
