Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman has won three gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal. She was part of the infamous American gymnastics team who totally slayed the competition at the 2016 Olympics. And yet, guys apparently still think that’s it’s okay to offer Raisman unsolicited remarks about her body.
Recently, Raisman was going through security at an unnamed airport, and encountered a salty remark from one of the male TSA employees.
According to a tweet sent out by Raisman, a female TSA employee remarked on Raisman’s biceps, which prompted the man in question to declare that he “didn’t see any muscles” on her.
While this remark seems like a run-of-the-mill rude employee mouthing off, Raisman says that it was more significant than that: the guy simply couldn’t handle the notion that a young woman could be strong and muscular, and felt the need to cut her down in order to assert his own masculinity.
She told her followers that she is “sick of this judgmental generation” — which, spoiler alert, is a reference to Baby Boomers, not millennials.
Raisman remarked that men who are threatened by female strength are, at their core, operating within sexist conventions.
It’s a bold move, insulting an Olympian who could probably kick your ass.
This isn’t the first time that Raisman has responded to the haters who try to shame her for her body type. In an Instagram post from last November, she thanked all of the adolescent boys who made fun of her muscular arms when she was growing up.
The caption reads:
Shoutout to all the boys from 5th-9th grade who made fun of me for being “too strong”. Thanks for forcing me to learn to love myself and my body. My muscular arms that were considered weird and gross when I was younger have made me one of the best gymnasts on the planet. Don’t ever let anyone tell you how you should or shouldn’t look. There is no such thing as a perfect body type.
So, to everyone who thinks they have a right to judge Aly Raisman’s body, step to the left, please: the Olympic judges already did that, and they gave her six damn medals.
Also, she looks undeniably amazing, and does not need your approval.
