Though we live in 2017 and society has become arguably more progressive than in past years, we still haven’t been able to shake the stigma surrounding periods. Many women are often too ashamed to openly discuss their menstruation cycles in front of other people and believe it or not, some women don’t even have access to proper feminine hygiene products.
It is for these reasons that Plan International UK and Plan Australia have decided to launch a campaign to create a period emoji and tbh, it’s about damn time we had one.
There might be a period emoji in the works…
According to the Plan International UK site, “Half of women aged 18-34 would find it easier to talk to their partner about their period if there was a period emoji – that’s why we’re calling for a #periodemoji to be made available on keyboards worldwide.”
The campaign also aims to raise money and awareness for young women around the world who don’t have the means to take care of their periods in a healthy way. This issue is much more severe than most people realize. Take for instance, the 15-year-old Nepalese girl who suffocated to death after being forced to sleep in a hut while she was menstruating.
Plan International has developed 5 unique designs so far and has asked the public to vote on their favorite one.
The most popular among the emoji will be submitted to the Unicode Consortium for further consideration. If approved, we could see the chosen emoji on our keyboards as soon as 2018.
You can cast your vote on either the Plan International Australia Facebook Page or the Plan UK campaign website.
Every vote counts!
