Britney Spears stans have been touting Brit’s vocal prowess for years. People who weren’t especially keen on Britney, however, often pointed to the use of auto-tune as proof that the pop star was more fluff than talented substance. (I know, it’s blasphemous, but I can’t control the rumor-mill.)
However, some new audio may just be here to quash the Britney-haters and their skepticism.
Recently, stripped-down audio of Britney’s 2003 hit, “Toxic,” leaked to the internet. This version features Britney’s real voice, entirely free of auto-tune — and the results are pretty surprising.
Without the distraction of auto-tune, we can finally appreciate that Britney (in addition to dancing skills) has the vocal chops to back up her popularity.
Even the YouTube commenters had to concede that Brit sounded pretty great on the admittedly difficult song. People are straight-up SHOOK.
And for anyone who’s still unimpressed, I’ll simply say: have you ever tried to sing “Toxic” at karaoke? That shit isn’t easy, y’all. It’s not in a particularly accessible range, and you can easily end up sounding like a damn fool when you sing it. So, hearing Britney pull off a pretty flawless version of the song, sans auto-tune, is inarguably impressive.
It’s time to admit what many of us have secretly suspected for years: Britney Spears is actually talented.
Haters, you are now dismissed.
