Twitter often devolves into a seething pit of contention and disagreements. And though the shitstorm can be entertaining, it’s also draining to surround oneself so much negativity on a daily basis — which is why it’s so heartening to occasionally see Twitter users respond to verbal attacks with pure positivity.
Kelly Clarkson recently dealt with an online hater who felt the need to berate her for her body type, but, rather than sinking to their level, she decided to respond with humor and grace.
One Twitter user tweeted at Clarkson last night with the simple and insulting declaration: “You’re fat.” (Not terribly clever, but trolls aren’t really known for their wit.)
Instead of lashing out at the hater or firing back, Clarkson simply shrugged and let the insensitive words roll off her back — but not before adding her own little addendum.
Not surprisingly, Kelly’s fans are all about this response.
Clarkson has always been fairly open when talking about her body and the derogatory comments she receives in regards to her physical appearance.
“I love how people think that’s new — like, ‘Welcome to the past 13 years,'” she told Ellen Degeneres in 2015. “Yeah, I was the biggest girl on (American Idol), too. And I wasn’t big, but people would call me big because I was the biggest one on Idol, and I’ve kind of always gotten that.”
“It’s like, you’re just who you are. We are who we are. Whatever size, and it doesn’t mean that we’re gonna be that forever,” she added. “That’s the thing. Sometimes we’re more fit. Like especially me, I’m such a creative person that I yo-yo. So, sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t, and I’m like… I’d rather have wine.”
