Los Angeles-based painter and illustrator Yaoyao Ma Van As’ work has appeared on Netflix’s BoJack Horseman, and Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty. But it’s her personal art that has us pining for a cup of tea and couple moments of peace and quiet.
Her art focuses on the chapter of her life before getting married, when it was just her and her little dog Parker. “Living alone isn’t as scary as it seems!” she said in an interview with The Huffington Post. “Yes, there were definitely times that it sucked, but there were also countless amazing moments as well,” Ma Van As recalled.
As wonderful as it is to share your life (and your space) with someone, there are times that’s it totally understandable that you’d miss having a life that’s just led for you. “It’s healthy to be around others, but it’s also healthy to be comfortable enough to spend time by yourself,” Ma Van As told HuffPost.
We couldn’t agree more.
Yaoyao Ma Van As’ personal art focuses on what she most loved about living on her own.
Like creating a “hair graveyard” on your shower wall.
Listening to YOUR music.
Laying in bed all day and not feeling bad about it.
Playing “Hide and Seek” with your pup.
Letting it all hang out.
Being the big spoon to your pet.
Sitting quietly in blissful silence.
Working as late as you want to.
Taking as long as you need to get ready.
Allowing yourself to be sad without having to explain why to anyone.
Leaving your hair all over the bathroom.
Dancing in your underwear with “Shake It Off” on full blast.
Falling to pieces when nothing fits right (or over anything at any time).
Dealing with heartbreak.
Reading for as long as you want.
